Marion to plead guilty to doping!

OK, OK... we can beat up on Marion while she is down, but what's the point? Maybe the first honest thing she's said in years is how badly she feels about her negative impact on so many people.

Now, the bigger question for which we have no answers: how many other Olympic and world champions and WR-holders are just as dirty as Marion was? IMHO, way more than any of us is willing to imagine.

I think the glee response is missing the bigger point here. This whole story is profoundly sad.Who's the winner here? Track looks bad, Marion looks bad and Tafnut looks like a senile old naive fool. Ok that part i like.

I can gloat that i was right about Marion but i really dont feel like gloating. Sad.

The Feds wouldn't let her out of the perjury trap without her first corroborating the testimony of her co-conspirators and cooperating in other investigations. They don't set the perjury trap without already knowing the endgame.

Remember she was involved in a whole host of crimes, including the bank fraud thing. The Feds had the responsibility to determine her part in that crime, if any.

My guess she gets a 6 month minimum security gig in the federal pen and probation.

so, the possibility is that she plea-bargained her way to a 6/12 sentence in jail on a check-fraud charge, which might be ?5 - 10y if convicted, by admitting to an unrelated drug-case, for which she might be totally innocent of, but, admitting to this will make some "other" feds whoppee-happy enough to get get her 5 - 10y check-fraud charge reduced to 6/12 & conjugal visits from a "9.69 endowed" guy ?

why would anyone believe in what she's saying now???? why would you believe that she only started doping in 99, and that she didn't know what they were giving her?

contrast your reactions if she was a chinese athlete or eastern european. would you be saying, "i wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt." yeah right...

No need to infect every thread with basic illogic. The Feds already had her on perjury. They needed to tie up the loose ends on the Riddick/Montgomery bank fraud case, so they squeezed her.

To tell you the truth, given that $50k checks were deposited in her account I have a hard time believing she wasn't an accomplice.

Marion and Martha have something in common.
The guidelines told the judge that Stewart should receive somewhere between 10 and 16 months in jail. Under their formula, Stewart's conduct and criminal history were evaluated on how first offenders throughout the United States who obstruct justice are sentenced.

I guess they eventually got Martha for the same thing. As far as I know you don't have to talk to the Feds about anything and why would you, if it's all regarded as potentially perjerious?

i just watched "the untouchables" again, on satellite

( after nearly 20y after seeing cinema release )

capone's weasly lawyer, after hearing the damning evidence on the stand from capone's bedraggled accountant ( elliot ness found him ) of the tax-evasion charge, immediately put in a "guilty" plea, for which scarface-capone-de niro, proclaimed "what the fuck" & tried to strangle his weasly with his bare hands - not knowing that the weasel had probably got him a 10y sentence by pleading guilty, instead of the 20y, he'd have got by proclaiming innocence & getting convicted

they got him on tax, not murder/extortion/vice/rackeetering/etc

is it not feasible that for marion, in order not to get a huge check-fraud sentence, she got a short sentence by pleading guilty to a non-criminal drug offense ( even if innocent ), but knowing that was worth a few years of non-jail time ?

You guys are being wimps!
Marion is/was a cheat, a liar, a phony, and a coward.
We should all be glad when criminals are caught, when cheats are busted, when undeserved rewards are taken back and given to the deserving, when wrongs are righted.
And by the way, Marion has shown no courage at all. She has denied these allegations for years and years; she threatened libel suits, she divorced CJ when he got caught, she dropped Tim Montgomery like a hot potato when he got caught. If she's admitting to something now, it's because they've got her between a rock and a hard place.
And she only has herself to blame!!! Was there any sprinter more talented?! Athletically, she didn't need to do this, but still she chose the crooked path of deception, cheating, lying.
Why? Selfish Ego. The media built her up like a mythical hero, and she ate it up.
She was put on the 4 x 400 relay at Sydney, even though she wasn't a 400m runner, just to satisfy her ego and satisfy the media. Meanwhile, some athlete who trained in that event for years got left on the sidelines so Marion could get even more glory, more limelight, more medals.
And now we know it was all a farce. It was unfair to the other athletes, to the sport, and to the fans. So why feel sorry for her?!

As for the good of the sport....nobody in America cares about T&F!, except the people on this board. And I am very happy, we should all be happy, to get rid of as many cheats and expunge as many phony records as possible.
Otherwise you are wishing for a sport full of Ben Johnsons, xxxx, and Barry Bonds.

p.s. My 1000th post! Couldn't be happier about the topic on which I reached that milestone!

NO! It's not feasible and it's NOT what she pleaded to. She pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury. The Feds wouldn't let her get away with the bank fraud case if she was involved.

Be careful what you wish for. As for the non-hardcore fans, T&F has been teetering on the brink of doom for a while, and this may cause it to fall into the trash-heap of Pro Wrestling and Roller Derby. Marion was as big a name as we've had in the last 20 years. Right up there with Carl Lewis. I bet she has/had a higher name recognition quotient than Michael Johnson. Now we are DEFINITELY the laughing stock of the sports world. Sure the NFL, MLB and NBA have bigger PED issues than we do, but THEY are 'forgiveable' by John Q Public and we are not. Whatever traction we've been enjoying recently, since BALCO died down, is now GONE. Every piece of media attention from here to Beijing will include a reference to Marion.

Yeah, I'm glad when we get rid of cheats, but I fear T&F will become even more marginalized that EVER and we, the 'real fans' are just going to get jaundiced stares when we mention what our favorite sport is. That's the REALITY of where we sit right now. Marion's case WILL have consequences.

Eldrick, we're all fans of the sport and, unlike Jacksf, I hate it as much as you do when one of the our stars is knocked off the pedestal. But remember this quote from Euripides:

Postby WalkandJog » Thu Oct 04, 2007 5:59 pm

It was so interesting a few years ago when it was such a hot debate about whether Marion was clean. Everyone deep down knew she was dirty. It was probably more interesting to see the excuses that Marion's supporters came up with to say she was clean. Everyone hates someone who says "I told you so," but in this case it was so obvious that it was painful to see how blindly faithful Marion's supporters were. If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, looks like a duck, but runs faster than a cheetah, sumthin ain't right.

i'm just wondering what 2 counts of perjury she claimed guilt to

assuming they were drug cases, there's been no +ve drug tests & usada coudn't "michelle collins" her into a non-analytical +ve/confession, so what were these "perjury" chages & what persuaded her to talk ?

if we have the details, many thanks

Before analysing her plea, wait til tomorrow (Friday) when she actually makes her court appearance (live cameras?) and plea.

The Wash Post story is based on a letter she wrote to relatives, who leaked it to the press. Maybe the plea bargaining is ongoing. We'll get the gritty details tomorrow.

Can you really believe she's going to prison?! Even if it's just a couple months, it's the track star in prison! Oh my! Then comes the big public confession (Ophra? Larry King too?) and the "forgive Marion" campaign as her image is rehabilitated... then comes the tv-movie, just in time for the Olympics, with the slow motion shots of her running gazelle-like to Wyndam Hill meditation music...

No doubt they had documentation with her name all over it. But, that's irrelevant now. Her admission of guilt is good enough to condemn her. That's what happened to Ben Johnson (only caught for Seoul; confessed to the previous 7 years).

As for what persuaded her? Reduced sentence, no doubt, for blowing the whistle on others (related to any number of the cases in which she's up to her eyes).

I felt she was guilty and said so.

I took shit from Tafnut.

I thought I would enjoy this day more than I am.

Is there anything more disappointing than cheering, rooting and putting an emotional commitment into an athlete, only to find out they have pulled the rug from underneath you by cheating?

When Kellie White developed thighs the size of barrels and left all of her previous form behind to win the Nationals, I had flown from Kentucky to Stanford to watch the meet. I was puzzled, but happy for her. When I learned she had cheated, I felt gyped.

I had seen Marion since she was a young teenager, followed her career through high school and college. I remember seeing an out-of-shape Marion competing in the long jump after she had been part of the NCAA championship basketball team at North Carolina.

I asked her coach what the hell happened to her body. He said she now had a basketball body.

Now I guess we know how her BB body morphed into that of an elite sprinter again!

The worst of the worst, to me, is that once again somebody lied to us.

I used to be a probation officer for juvenile delinquents and never was able to figure out when a kid was lying to me.

Stuff like this makes you never want to put an emotional investment in an athlete again. Most just are not worth the time.

In the end, I have only one comment: how pathetic is this young woman Marion Jones?

Right on!!!

I totally agree. She is a liar of the highest order and has little conscience and integrity.
I don't think she is telling the whole truth even now- I believe she knew damn well what she was putting in her body. She is an habitual liar.
She admitted just enough to get a light sentence.
I feel sorry for her young son but that is it.

Dispenses the illegal substances, then sends in a syringe.

Sick bastard.

Who knows. As others have pointed out, she's a liar, a cheat, and a drug abuser who insulted our collective intelligence by pretending to be a saint while her co-conspirators fell around her. I don't have a soft spot for anyone who falls into those categories. I could care less why they nailed her. What's important is that they finally did. And I will be just as satisfied when all the others get their comeuppance.

And what is with this lame-ass "flax seed oil" excuse? Barry Bonds and Marion Jones: Mr. and Mrs. Flax Seed Oil of 2007.

This is the best story they could come up with?

Just read her letter and it makes me sick. (and I am one of the most softhearted people around  ).Oh sure she admits to some wrong doing but only after she paints herself as a victim and a hero for trying to protect others...blah blah blah. She even hints that she is good mother for trying to protect her son's father.

Marion knew exactly what she was doing every step of the way. Even now she is only looking out for number one. My gut (and I do rely on my gut! :P ) tells me her regret is only for herself and not for her family and all the fans she has hurt.
