Roid rage back in the news
Irony in this story is that they had been playing up a phony assassination of Vince McMahon on commercials all week. Then this comes up.
Steroids may have been a part of this, but let us not be so quick to ascribe the blame to them. This is obviously the act of an unstable individual. Other factors may be present and contributing (in accident investigation-speak).
There are a ton of pro athletes out there that are on roids and not killing their family members. It seems to be a deliberate act in which he bound his wife's feet and hands and strangled her. Hours later he then suffocated his son. Steroid rage usually results in someone going off and beating someone, stabbing or shooting them to death rather than a prolonged methodical killing off of one's family. I've always thought that Benoit looked like a loose cannon.
Wouldn['t surprise me to find a drug component, but for causative agent in that arena, I'd be faster to point a finger at a cycle of uppers and downers. Particularly the former.
The other thing that can't be ignored is that Benoit had forged a life around an ultra-violent sport, and was probably disposed to violence from the time he tore the wings off his first fly at age 4. When somebody who already belongs to this kind of group goes off the deep end, one may not need to look beyond the basic original genetic makeup.
I think I'd stop short of calling pro wrestling ultra-violent. Not saying the men IN the sport aren't predisposed to violence, due in large part to the various chemicals they pump into their bodies, but the "sport" itself is all theater. 
The bodies are created for show, not go.
i heard Jim Rome on ESPN this afternoon interviewing China, the lady who used to wrestle in the WWE. After freely admitting that steroids are used by most wrestlers in the league, she denied ever using them herself. Far be it from me to say she is dishonest, but have any of y'all seen this lady?
If the body was not enough evidence, her voice is, sad to admit, more masculine than mine.

The old dope forum was for this area of discussion, not certain it's fair to backdoor into the topic via other pages (as someone recently did with an HGH in Europe story). The line betw'n the issue in each sport is a thin one, discussion should be either encouraged or disallowed (particularly since Bonds may have 756 before long).

from what i have read the steroids were prescribed by a doctor, so i am sure the doctor monitored the usage, i think he was a great wrestler/actor who just snapped. a lot of people in combat sports are the nicest kindest people you will ever meet, in wrestler terry funks book he said adrian adonis drank 22 beers demanded to drive the car, was going over 100 miles an hour and waved as he passed a cop car, then gratiously signed autographs for all the cops, he beat the test probably because he ate a five foot sandwich with the 22 beers, in bad news allen,s book adonis played a joke by leaving a rental car on the railroad tracks, which led to all wrestlers in titan sports being banned from rental cars, alot of wrestlers are just playing a character and like adonis are just fun loving practical jokers who only pretend to be violent when the cameras go on.
the funny thing about pro wrestling is some of the wrestlers can wrestle and win even if a match is legitimate, the best college wrester each year gets the danny hodge award, hodge was an undefeated 3 time ncaa champion and olympic silver medalist, kurt angle won 2 ncaa championships and an olympic gold. there are many others, i would bet that even chris benoit could have beaten the average man in either an amateur wrestling match or possibly a street fight, but now we will never know.

The fact that he had a doctor's Rx for the steroids does not take away from the fact that his physique could not have been what it was without them. Not all doctors are pure of heart.
My feeling remains that this act was not the result of the drugs alone, but of a mixture of problems (personal, mental, and chemical). His actions, and his drug use, were not the only factors. Not all wrasslers are to b connected to his actions.

Perhaps not so much 'roid rage, given the 48 hour span of the acts, but the result of prolonged depression brought on by having a young son w/ Fragile X Syndrome. Not all big strong dads deal well w/ congenitally ill children:
