¶mHigh Jump: Jim Dilling 7-5 1/4 (2.27)I'm wimping out and working inside today, rather than risk a major meltdown in this rain, which of course has almost stopped at this very moment.
Five simultaneous field events at one point today, so I don't know what will happen with which. Last edited by dj on Sun Jun 24, 2007 8:12 am, edited 1 time in total.

Looks like he is in for a short day. I guess those California's can't handle some good old fashioned Midwestern weather.

Shunk has only met the B-standard (2.27). I've heard the rules are changed by the IAAF so that nations can send 2 athletes with an A-standard and 1 with a B-standard. How is USATF policy? will they send the top-3 with an A-standard (would mean Williams taking the third spot) or use the 2+1? anyone know?
I was wondering the same thing. Dwight said it was was because neither had the A-standard, but we all know that CAN'T be the reason. It MUST be so that we have a clear 2nd and a clear 3rd, so that if and when someone doesn't get the A but someone else does, we can send three and know who to send?
haha, I removed my question since I thought it might be stupid :)
I thought that Nieto had met the A-standard in 2006, but he hasn't. So that's probably the reason...They can't send two at a B-standard. You are absolutely right Tafnut
Miserable conditions out there. Athletes like Williams and Sellers bring a lot of speed into the curve and when you can't do that your steps and positioning are completely out of whack. It's a shame for Scott with 2.32 and 2.33 clearances this year, but he'll be back in 08' in a big way.
HOWEVER, I thought was watching Eurosport there for a minute with the in depth coverage of the field events in general. It almost reminded me of the pay-per-view "Triple Cast" that they had for Barcelona 92'. Finally, Track & FIELD was shown instead of a 'track' meet.
There's another possibility. I believe a country can enter only two in each event in the Pan-American Games, and if all of the top three wanted to go, they'd need a jump-off to break the tie for second.
So who won the jump-off between Shunk and Nieto? They both have "B" standard. Only Dilling is clear. Williams in 4th and Mofffat in 5th have "A" standards.
So the way I understand this only one B can start in Osaka. Whoever won the jump-off will then jump in Osaka. The jump-off loser will jump in Osaka provided he gets the "A" before Aug 1. Really frustrating to watch the HJ on NBC. Dwight comes on for about 10 seconds at a time. It's way to fast, like always. He did have time to say that Williams was the world's fastest in the turn in the run-up at this time. HJers are only shown from the knees up untill they are on top of the bar. It might have been way too fast, but it was there, and it was there sequentially and not -- here is third, second, and first. Given the constraints and the typical coverage I really appreciated it. Add to that, for some reason I thought that the program was only going to be 60 minutes and so I was quite surprised to be getting running commentary on the HJ. It also made it possible to see the evolution of the weather (drying up). Of course, the HJ was not quite at the same level as the 200!!!!!
I know what you are saying but I can't take these 10 second snippets. When Dwight comes on it's panic city because he's gone in a flash while the other guys can drone on with endless, banal human interest stuff.
both explanations were factors
I don't believe this. Have you ever seen Holm, now he is fast.
Think weather had much to do with it? Lowest winning height since same setting in '81.
Yes- They had to do most of their warm-ups in the pouring rain. Although the rain had mostly stopped by the time the competition started, they were wet, the pit was was wet and the apron was still wet. I wasn't cold as a spectator, but I was wearing a jacket and rain pancho. I'm sure they had to be feeling pretty miserable.
Once the rain stopped (before 1pm) I took off my rain jacket and the rest of the afternoon wore just a T-shirt (and, yes, I was also wearing pants). I was not at all cold. I believe the temp was in the 70's.

Not quite. Indy's first one was 2 years later, in 1983. 1981 was Sacramento.
