1956 California HS Championshipsare supposedly on video at DyeStat.com, but I have never been able to get them to play.
Anyone know the secret to unlocking this historical treasure? thanks. http://www.dyestatcal.com/ATHLETICS/TRACK/56_state.htm
Wow if you are a Cal HS historian this is a gem. Its a avi/quick time file - so you'd need that - but most puters have it. bunch of shot putters, 880 race (about 15 or more in final) - good race, 440 - about 20 in a single race final, 100 y final, pole vault and high jump with the good ol black and white steel cross bars. Sand dust pits so PVers are basically standing up on their landings - HJers bein careful - no Fosburys here. a number of pictures of pre and post race competitors. Hurdles with those humongoid 4x4 or whatever hurdles. One guy falls with one hurdle left as he was closing fast on first. I think he later wins the 180 or 220 lows just passing the 120hh winner. Night events were poorly lit - running in and out of the shadows/light. Long (broad) jump. I think a straight 220. Stagger start w one lap before breaking in the mile, ~16 guys in final - 2 per lane. Ahh - the 4x2 relay.
Young bucks - in the day Pretty good selection of events. Fairly regular 'flickering' but not enough to make it too annoying. Pretty much the essence of 1956 and how our sport was at the time
What a treat... hope Jack is able to make it work. I had no trouble with the smaller download.
Lots of big names here but you need a guide to identify them. this site helps: http://www.dyestatcal.com/ATHLETICS/TRACK/stateres.htm Bob Avant, Luther Hayes, Dave Davis, Mel Profit, Jack Yerman, Willie White, Bob Poynter, and Jerry White just destroys the field in the 440... ya gotta be old to know these names but if you are this video is a lot of fun. AND, when is the last time you saw a 180 low hurdles race, a straight-away 220 or a parking lot full of 1954 Fords and Chevys?
Dave Davis lived about 5 or 6 houses from us when I was 'growing up' in So Cal. He at Canoga Park HS in SFV. It wasn't until a few yrs after those 56 states that we were even aware of him other than seeing this great big guy from time to time. We were too green in the sport to appreciate. In fact '56 was about 4 yrs before track became a top priority in our house. He worked for the local parks and rec as I recall and put on 'track meets' from time to time.
Wow.. that is pure beauty.. I love it.. Charge 10USd and Ill go to a theatre to watch it...Where did that country go to, I want to become a citizen.
I still can't get the video to play at home or at work.
I must not have the right program. Can someone tell me if Carlos Tan (4th in the 400m) is Filipino? Meanwhile there are also videos at Dyestat .com of the California State Championships from 1985 to 1989. In '85, '86, and '87 you can see Quincy Watts, Steve Lewis, Mike Marsh, and Danny Everett. Here's the link to 1985 http://www.dyestatcal.com/ATHLETICS/TRA ... ateres.htm you can watch Chip Rish (I guess he was the Jeremy Wariner of his day) beat Danny Everett in the 400m, and watch Marsh win the 200m. For each year, just click on State Results, and you will bring up a page with a list of videos and the results for the meet. Enjoy!
eh, not quite.
Many, many thanks!!! for this confirmation. I had heard that he was Filipino, and have been trying to confirm it for years! I would still love to see this video eventually.
