iPod II--The AlbumsWow! Whoda thunk that that silly iPod thread would become one of our biggest sellers ever. Since it has petered out a bit, let's modify the rules. Once again you're marooned on a desert island with an iPod, but this time you get to have 10 albums. With minor clarifications:
*Once again, no artist can have more than one entry. *No greatest-hits compilations are allowed. *One of them has to be classical music. Now, how to decide which of 16 Beatles albums to take?!
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsFirst one is easy:
U2-Joshua Tree Gotta think about the rest.
Re: iPod II--The Albums>First one is easy:
U2-Joshua Tree Gotta think about the rest. The question probably could be answered but not easily. Here are 9 more that could easily be changed: Fleetwood Mac-Rumours Bowie-Station to Station Moby-Play New Order-Power Corruption and Lies Springsteen-Born To Run Supertramp-Crime of the Century Elton John-Captain Fantastic Genesis-The Lamb The Cure-Head on the Door
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsOff the top of my head, I'm thinking:
Stevie Wonder - "Songs In The Key Of Life" India Arie - "Voyage To India" Jill Scott - "Experience +826" Glenn Lewis - "World Outside My Window" Floetry - "Floetic" Musiq Soulchild - "JusLisen" Erykah Badu - "Baduizm" Koffee Brown - "Mars Venus" Faith Evans - "Faithfully" Alicia Keys - "Songs In A Minor" - that's my classical one... Sunday Times (UK) listed it under the "classical" category when it was released, so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :-p
Re: iPod II--The Albums>*One of them has to be classical music.<
Does that mean one and only one, or does it mean at least one? And how do you count the Ring? >Now, how to decide which of 16 Beatles albums to take?!< I'll take Sgt. Pepper, with Abbey Road a close second.
Re: iPod II--The Albums>The Beatles' album was easy too: Rubber Soul>>
American version? 1.I've Just Seen A Face; 2.Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown); 3.You Won't See Me; 4.Think For Yourself; 5.Word, The; 6.Michelle; 7.It's Only Love; 8.Girl; 9.I'm Looking Through You; 10.In My Life; 11.Wait; 12.Run For Your Life or English version? 1. Drive My Car; 2. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown); 3. You Won't See Me; 4. Nowhere Man; 5. Think for Yourself; 6. Word; 7. Michelle; 8. What Goes On; 9. Girl; 10. I'm Looking Through You; 11. In My Life; 12. Wait; 13. If I Needed Someone; 14. Run for Your Life
Re: iPod II--The Albums>>*One of them has to be classical music.<
Does that mean one and only one, >or does it mean at least one? And how do you count the Ring?>> At least one; all be can classical if you're so inclined. I count The Ring as 4. (*although at one point I was considering a rule that if you're talking the original CD/album it can't be more than one disc)
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsBeing the lazy guy I am, here is VH1’s list of top 100:
http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_albums.html I choose: 6. The Beatles-Rubber Soul (1965) [US version] 12. The Rolling Stones-Exile on Main Street (1972) 13. The Who-Who's Next (1971) 15. U2-The Joshua Tree (1987) 16. Fleetwood Mac-Rumors (1977) 43. Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin (1969) 50. Police-Synchronicity (1983) 61. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young-Deja Vu (1970) 89. Derek & the Dominos-Layla (1970) plus that classical album, of which I know little beyond Beethoven so I’ll take the 9th

Re: iPod II--The AlbumsAlthough I'd agree on Bob Marley's Legend, I think that its a "best of" compilation and thus disqualified for this discussion.
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsEGH needs to step in here. Nowhere on the cover does it say "Best of" so you have to cut me some slack here and accept "Legend"
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsMy ego has taken a beating during these threads--no one has selected Fifth of Beethoven by the Walter Murphy Band. I was too modest to make it one of my own picks(:-)
Re: iPod II--The Albums>EGH needs to step in here. Nowhere on the cover does it say "Best of" so you
>have to cut me some slack here and accept "Legend" HUH? The album cover says "Legend" "the best of...Bob Marley and the Wailers."

>you >have to cut me some slack here and accept "Legend" HUH? The album >cover says "Legend" "the best of...Bob Marley and the Wailers." And just to prove that Malmo is telling the truth, here's a super-duper-zoomed-in version of the cover: http://www.caratuleo.com/b/bob_marley_- ... -front.jpg

Re: iPod II--The AlbumsWhile I was out on my 3-mile run today – oops, I mean 3-mile JOG – 25 minutes is OVER 8 minute pace, disqualifying me from runner’s status – I was thinking about the next step after this thread (and yes, I know how pathetic it is to be thinking about an internet board while AWAY from the computer, but the mind wanders) would be video, and how much more difficult a choice that would be. Movies really wouldn’t work, because, whereas we look forward to familiar musical melodies, our minds crave new visual stimulus. Dramas would be particularly pointless, because we seek to know HOW a conflict is resolved, and once we know that, it ceases to hold our attention. I rarely see a movie twice in the same year (of course, ‘The Return of the King’ is a notable exception; there was so much to see).
But a TV series would be doable. Shows that feature comedy AND music are the obvious choices, and I imagine most people would include the full run of ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ (were they available) for that very reason. Again dramas would not fare well, even my early favorite ‘The Twilight Zone’, simply because the joy is the revelation at the end. My all-time favorite series, ‘M.A.S.H.’ would have to accompany me, and ‘Cheers’, but then I’m not sure. Even ‘I Love Lucy’ would begin to wear after a while. But we can save this for another time, another thread – BTW - “Malcolm in the Middle” is on tonight, since the Sugar Bowl is anti-climactic. I already gave USC the trophy.
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsYeah, a movie or video thread for the desert island (how about Mt Desert Island for the spot?) would be neat. About watching movies more than once, I disagree about dramas. If enough time has passed, you notice things you forgot (just hate the Alzheimers) or missed on the 1st n viewings. My wife and I stay home on New Years eve (amateur hour) and fix something good, with a bottle of good wine, and then watch a couple old movies. This year it was African Queen (3rd time each) and Greed, which neither of us had seen. How weird to watch a silent movie at home. I see that Metropolis is out in DVD, so maybe that next year.

Re: iPod II--The AlbumsGotta delurk for a shot at this one.
Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue John Coltrane -- Giant Steps Ornette Coleman -- The Shape of Jazz to Come The Beatles -- Rubber Soul (English) The Who -- Who's Next Bruce Springsteen -- Born to Run The Clash -- The Clash Elvis Costello -- This Year's Model Nirvana -- Nevermind Classical's not my strong suit, so I'll stick to something basic -- Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor Ten is so few . . . These are all necessarily so basic. Now how about a more obscure top ten?
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsBeatles-Sgt. Peppers
Handel-Messiah Van Morrison-Moondance Bob Dylan-Blood on the Tracks Boston-Boston Bruce Springsteen-Nebraska Fleetwood Mac-Rumors Tannahill Weavers-Dancing Feet REM-Murmur Michael Jackson-Thriller
Re: iPod II--The Albumsps- so many albums would make top 10, but have too many weak cuts on them(even 'greatest hits' albums - ever notice how many of your favorites aren't on them?). And Beethoven's 9th would be on mine, but EVERY (30+?) recording I've heard has at least one or two fair-to-poorly done movements! I miss the old drug days, when everything sounded just right.....
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsBeatles - Abbey Road
Marvin Gaye - What's Goin On Bruce Springsteen - The Wild the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle Eagles - Hotel California Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Prince - Purple Rain Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes - This Time It's For Real Classic - a tape of my daughter playing "Fir Elise" over and over and OVER again.

Re: iPod II--The Albums>> I miss the old
>drug days, when everything sounded just right.....>> Yeah, how about a thread on which ten drugs would be best on a desert island
Re: iPod II--The Albums>>By the way, I have no idea what an "iPOD" is...(I
>still have a turntable!).>> An iPod is Apple's version of an MP3 (digital audio files) player. Other companies may well make one as good, but it's truly a fabulous piece of machinery. Imagine a small rectangle about the size of a pack of cigarettes, only smaller. And it holds 20 GIGABYTES of music (close to 5000 top-40 type songs, probably). And it has them arranged by song, by composer, by genre, by artist. And by creating different folders on your main computer (using Apple's iTunes) you can custom create playlists of anything you can imagine. Tell it to put every song that has "love" in its title into one folder and zap, there it is. You never view music quite the same ever again.
Re: iPod II--The Albums>>Ten is so few . . .
>These are all necessarily so basic. Now how about a more obscure top ten?>> OK, when this burns out we can have a thread on song(s) you actually have in your "regular play" list that you figure nobody else in the board would have in their top 500 songs. Gems like "Tiger Rag" by the Bonzo Dog Band, or "The Intergalactic Laxative" by Donovan.
Re: iPod II--The AlbumsSome of you may have heard of this one, but does anyone else have it besides me? When I play this to students, they ALL like it. One of my 'lost treasures'.
"Memphis Soul Stew" by Atlantic Rhythm & Blues
