What college can..........

Postby Brutal » Fri Apr 18, 2003 9:40 am

....deal with this fantasy 4x4 relay tean using athletes who ran at a certain school one time or another.......alumni in other words.

UCLA-A

Steve Lewis
Danny Everett
Wayne Collett
John Smith

UCLA-B

Maxie Parks
Benny Brown
Henry Thomas
Warren Edmonson

Not a bad 4x2 team.....Marsh Everett Hampton Boldon

Any takers?

A lot of teams can beat the B squad. Why? Maxie and Warren will have to run 800s, since Benny's gone and Henry's in the slam.

I've got an even better question: other than the U.S., what COUNTRY could put together an all-start team that could beat UCLA? Maybe none?

Guess what? Arizona State could run those UCLA guys to the wire:

Ulis Williams
Maurice Peoples
Herm Frazier
Henry Carr

(note members of WR-setting 4x4s Ron Freemans I & II don't make the starting lineup; so ASU is on its way to a good B squad as well)

ASU could put up a fight no doubt about it I had them in mind.

I was running....

Herm Frazier
Henry Carr
Maurice Peoples
Ron Freeman

....however. Keep in mind Ulis Williams was just a 45.0 guy.

ASU B

Ulis Williams
Howard Henley
Tony Darden
Mal Spence....Jamaican Olympian

There is another team out there that could hang here...mmmm?

Do you know the way to San Jose?
I've been away so long
I may go wrong and lose my way
Do you know the way to San Jose
I'm going back to find some piece of mind San Jose -a
L. A. is a great big freeway
Put a hundred down a by a car
In a week - or maybe two - they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years and quickly pass
And all the stars there never were a parkin' cars and pumpin' gas
I've got lots of friends in San Jose
Wo oh oh oh
Can't wait to get back to San Jose
Wo oh oh oh
Do You know the way to San Jose?

"just a 45-flat guy?!" Anybody can simply add up best times; for a fanciful compilation like this one (or your "best sprinter ever" thread) you've got to do some time-machine transporting and assign relative value to people.

Ulis Williams was High School Record holder, 2x No. 1 world ranker, etc., etc. Put him in a modern setting and he's gotta be on your team (and better than, say Danny Everett for UCLA).

Let me remind everyone that Georgia Tech isn't exactly a long way behind UCLA on the A-T list (3/100ths if I recall correctly).

I'll take these 4 from Tech over UCLA's dream team.

Jose Saint gave us the words to "Do you know the way..." I assume that was his way of suggesting that SJ State (Speed City) fits into this discussion, in which case he must be smoking speed! As in, where's your fourth man, baby?

But I would stack up Carlos (45-second relay split as a frosh), Evans and Smith against any other collegiate 3x4 team!

Very familiar with Williams and I doubt he'd be better than Everett under any circumstances.

Not a challenge to the Bruin team, but a tough one that might otherwise be overlooked is Ohio State.

1) Butch Reynolds (:43.29)
2) Chris Nelloms (:44.3)
3) Andrew Pierce (:44.5)
4) A) Robert Smith (:45.5)
B) Jesse Owens (?, did he ever run a 4 X 400?)

Where's Lon Myers and Bernie Wefers?

Myers held the American record in the 50,100,200,400,800 and the mile all at one time or another in his sprint career.

Wefers ran a WR 9.8 in 1895. His 300 WR of 30.6 stood for 39 years! He has been callled the greatest sprinter of the 19th century.

seems I remember a pretty good USC sprinter/footballer that had a "slammer" problem too, but he was found "not guilty" and now plays golf ? And that team set a GOOD WR; 38.6 h,y ain't too bad !

McCullouch to Kuller to Killer to Miller

No college team other than an MJ anchored Bruin team would stand chance. Remember they have no less than six Olympic quartermilers. Now add another four who all ran sub 45.0r in the 4x4.

In fact, they have zero Olympic quartermilers. There has never been a quarter mile in the Olympics and there probably never will be.

Mmmmm?

Has a QB ever actually thrown a "bomb?' Is Mike Tyson really made of "iron?" Does Jon Drummond really have a "rocket" start? Was Ervin Johnson really "magic?"

Is the 200 not called the "deuce?" Is a basketball really a "rock?"

Was she actually a "fox?"

Is 400 meter not a "quarter" of a mile?

Don't think you'd be much fun at a party.

I'm pretty sure that Owens never did -- certainly not in 1935 or 1936 (his complete seasonal record is documented in "Track & Field Performances Through the Years, Vol 1"). In 1934 he was ineligible as he was a freshman.

I think that you're forgetting two other great OSU quarter-milers -- Glenn Davis and Mal Whitfield. Between them they have 2 Oly gold (relay) medals and 3 #1 rankings in the 400, and 6 Oly golds and 12 #1 rankings in all events combined.
