The 2006 Tafnies!

Postby tafnut » Sat Dec 30, 2006 10:57 am

Yup, it’s time to look back at the year that was 2006. What jewels of postingdom were bestowed upon us? What words of wisdom (sic)? What made us laugh - what made us cry - what, indeed, were we thinking, wasting our time here??!! Here are some of the shenanigans that transpired - feel free to add your own favorites!

It was a year of ups and downs. We had the emergence of the m200 as a marquee event, first with the X-Man (clearly the Tafny ‘Man of the Year’), then Gay, then Spearmon.

Then we had the busts :-(
Gatlin went down hard - Marion was about to follow, when she got a last-second reprieve, but the damage was already done in the public’s eye. This seemed to overshadow even Asafa (aka Donovan) Powell's 9.77 =WR.

We speculated interminably about Wariner’s 800 potential (in the midst of a stellar 400 season). We obsessed about Gabe and Webb (again!), as Webb ran a stellar 10K (‘hurting’ himself in the process) and Gabe made a comeback that NONE of us saw coming!

We continued our love affair with WCSN. We agonized over ‘Book of Shadows’.

We found out from Skeets that being a slow runner makes you a fast hurdler.

We signed up to get free running shoes from Nike.

Two of the board’s most mentally challenged posters went at it over the HS Mile vs. 1600, as exemplified in this post:
Poster A wrote: ‘Recognize that the fight is not against Poster B; Poster B is not the enemy here. He is but the clueless tool who has been duped by the lazy, ignorant, head-in-the-sand bureaucrats at the NFHS who created the 1600. Poster B is to be compassionately pitied here. Undoubtedly his early indoctrination at a neo-con school such as Stanford, followed by 20 years in the Navy, is instrumental in his being unable to question irrational authority. There may have been a time when he was able to rationally look at issues such as this, but alas, that time is long past . . .’

We had the ‘AJ Cover’ brouhaha (w/ happy ending). AJ’s brilliant comeback at the end of the season helped accentuate the event’s best season ever (?) as the WR and AR went in one race.

We had multiple personality disorder breakdowns with the likes of Brutal/Texas, then Mandy/Prober/Accelerator/?

Sometimes we didn’t discuss current track news at all, instead we
* picked best movie lines
* discussed foreign languages
* waged Signature Wars - with Jack Bauer as ammo
* lost and gained smileys
* wondered where in the world EPelle was
* tried to link gh’s names
* speculated about Lance’s NY Marathon debut
* drank Zat0pek’s Kool-aid
* argued the pros and cons of corn on the cob eating styles
* had Fear & Loathing at Heathrow Airport
* mourned Bob Mathias and others
* found out (eventually) why track died in 1958
* saw Dick take a Pounding
* worried as the iPod thread never reached 1000.
* worried more that MJD and EPelle had as little life as the other Decamillennialists.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But on to posts and posters themselves!

stallion had his take on the Brutal/Texas scrappings in:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... ht=#286996

Likewise Jug weighed in on a banning:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... y&start=60

DrJay had a classic post on PEDs:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... ight=tafny

EPelle gave us a classic behind-the-scenes at the European Championships:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... ight=tafny

Zat0pek had a dream where he saw:

"Due to the sophisticated nature of labs creating undetectable performance enhancing drugs and masking agents, we believe it is in the best interests of the sport to suspend competitions until such time as we are confident that testing procedures yield fair results and accurate records. Therefore, the 2006 season is hereby canceled."

d_austin certainly had the double entendre post of the year with:
A few years ago after observing that Viagra was being advertised on T&F telecasts, I wrote that I thought this was a troubling indicator of the sport's flaccid US popularity. But Webb et al. have aroused new interest esp. among distance fans such as myself, and I wouldn't write such a letter today. Things are looking up!

MJD/squackee had their own stand-up routine here:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... y&start=30

The Infinite Mirror thread was the most Derridian:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... ight=tafny

Pego reposted a classic: How to sing the Blues . . . A Primer

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... s&start=60

lonewolf was selected Best Geezer and had a nostalgic look at cars:

http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... c&start=30

nevetsllim was voted Whippersnapper of the Year

piaba had a nasty meltdown.

Kuha couldn’t find anyone to egg into a fight.

DaveW was unanimously elected as Space Cadet Supreme. No wait, that was MattMarriott.

Daisy and figo shared honors as ‘Best real scientific approach to PEDs’

Squackee retired the MOTSOTH Cup (Most Out There Sense of Track Humor)

BadHammy was named Curmudgeon of the Year (again).

Eldrick retired from the boards - several times.

Mojo baked several pies.

Jon became the most hated person alive, when he traveled the track world ON BUSINESS.

* * * * *

So what else deserves the Shock & Awe that IS a Tafny?!

"Kuha couldn’t find anyone to egg into a fight."

I feel positively scrambled. A couple weeks ago, when I was in Miami, it was more like sunny side up. All this drug talk really boils me. This long weekend will be easy over...

Excellent recap -- awesome stuff! However, I think I was lost in Berlin two years ago, and found on a stretcher in the woods north of Göteborg ;-)

I think Daisy and Figo should get honorary Ph D Tafny for all of their work on the science side of the equation.

26:er has added a new dimension to the statistical probabilities of X²+8= something magical.

MJD must qualify for the only poster who uses the fewest words to make a point; his cumulative posting must equal half of one standard sheet of paper.

Of course, the highlight of all highlights for the year had to be jammin, tafnut, Accelerator, and of course yours truly getting some New York Times play.

Poor Squackee! Oh well, Vincent Van Gogh wasnt appreciated in his life time either. Sold one painting. Dahlmer's work was appreciated but that's another story for another time ladies and gentlemen.

Great Job Tafnut! Thank you! Oh and Squackee thanx you.

It took you 8 minutes to reply....were you working on your new hobby...cross stitching?

(come on you didn't say I had to keep that secret).

I hate SQUACK most of the time but he CAN be funny. My fav post by him was deleted- he wrote a great monologue on why we should be grateful the terrorists have a cap on the number of Americans they would kill.

By far the funniest post of the year.

I want it back...can deleted threads be reclaimed at the internet retruns counter? :D

Mojo, isnt it weird being able to see a genius that no one else can see?. What am i? The freaking track ghost of Christmas past?

I give and i give and i give. Im a giver. Basically a saint. One award? I poop awards. I got 2 maybe 3 Emmy's glogging up my septic fields.

I find the award i got adorable. You made one mistake though. You made me mad.( I may have been watching too many westerns). The 2007 Squack is coming. Stripped to the bone and twice as pissed.

I really threaten you don't I?

Well get over it cos the 2007 mojo is rolling off the factory floor as we speak- and trust me there is junk in the trunk that you won't be able to handle . :twisted:

And I am not talking mincemeat tarts, eggnog and gravy...well maybe a little bit. :oops:
