This may be a hijack of the thread, but someone brought up the point of NCAA regionals, and something occurred to me at a college meet this weekend. I am VERY in favor of the regional format because head to head comp.=good, mark chasing=bad. However, I must say that I'm not sure the regionals have eliminated mark chasing. Sure, at the very highest end of the sport it has-but look at the just level below the highest. After almost every race, the PA man informed us of how the time measured up to the regional qualifying mark. I would suggest that the regional format has not decreased mark chasing- it has just changed who is chasing marks.
