Colorado's Torres, Texas' McIntosh earn Mondo track & field honors

May 8, 2003-Distance runner Jorge Torres of Colorado and hurdler Raasin
McIntosh of Texas have been named Mondo NCAA-I athletes of the week by the
Division I coaches group of the United States Track Coaches Assn.

They are recognized for performances in competition ending with the weekend
of May 2-3.

Torres, a senior, won the 5,000-meter run in 13:24.56 over a stellar field at
the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford. It was Torres' best time and moved
him to the top of the year's U.S. and collegiate lists; it was also the fifth
best mark ever by an American collegian.

McIntosh, a junior, won both hurdle events at the Texas Invitational, taking
the 100 highs in a wind-aided 12.90, good for a share of both the U.S. and
collegiate leads, and the 400 intermediate hurdles in 56.46.

Other men nominated were sprinter Kyle Farmer of Florida, quarter-miler O.J.
Hogans of Seton Hall and sprinter Richard James of Long Island University.

Other women nominated were sprinter Charlette Greggs of Miami,
middle-distance runner Becky Lyne of Butler, sprinter Sanya Richards of Texas
and sprinter Novlene Williams of Florida.

The coaches' group will recognize a man and woman each week through the
remainder of the collegiate outdoor season, which ends with the NCAA
championships June 11-14 at Cal State-Sacramento.

An eight-member panel of track and field journalists selects the athletes of
the week from nominations submitted by coaches.

I can't wait to see J. Torres and Alistair Cragg duke it out again, this time at the NCAA 5k. Perhaps Boaz Cheboiywo will get his peak right in this race. I think he left too much on the training track before xc's and indoor's.

Ideal race: Cheboiywo takes it out at an honest, fast pace and then the 3 of them take turns surging until the tape.
