Great DoublersHistory's Best Doublers. In my opinion, with many left blank:
100/200 1. Lewis 2. Owens 3. Borzov 4. Morrow 200/400 1. MJ 2. Tommie Smith 400/800 1. Juantorena 2. Harbig 800/1500 1. Coe 2. Snell 3. Ryun 4. Ovett 1500/3000 1. Aouita 2. Morceli 3. Herb Elliott (theoretical, in Elliott's case, but he was that kind of runner.) 4. Keino 3000/5000 5000/10000 10000/marathon 110H/400H Shot/Discus LJ/TJ Other: 100/110H 1. Harrison Dillard! 400/400H
Re: Great DoublersWell, obviously, Geb 5/10.
And of course the great tripler: Zatopek, 5/10/marathon
Re: Great DoublersTo fill in a few of your blanks:
10000/marathon: Zatopek; Radcliffe Shot/Discus: Godina's pretty good LJ/TJ: Mike Conley 100/110H 1. Harrison Dillard! good call! also: Gail Devers (100/100h) 400/400H: Glenn Davis High jump/pole vault: Rick Sloan; Donovan Kilmartin (HS), but this is veering down the decathlon route, not really a classic double. For "odd" doubles, it would probably be mostly the decathletes. What's the weirdest double you can imagine? Marathon/shot put?
Re: Great Doublershat's the weirdest double you can imagine? Marathon/shot put?
50k walk/hammer throw
Re: Great DoublersIs the "all around championship" still being contested?
In the seventies it was 10 events in 1 day.... included 1500m racewalk, 16 lb. hammer throw, then some ordinary events. Usually hosted in Maine in August or so.
Re: Great DoublersHow about the NC girl Donohue? Didn't she go mile/javelin at the hs outdoor nationals. Or Gail Olsen approx. 7'7" off one leg, blew out a knee and came back with a 7'3 or 7'4" off the other leg.
Re: Great DoublersTHE ONLY TRUE GREAT DOUBLE.THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE!!! VIREN 5000/10000 '72 AND '76
Re: Great Doublers100/200m: Ato Boldon and Frank Fredericks!
How could you leave these two off the list? Both have great distinction: Fredericks has the fastest all-time double (9.86,19.68), and Boldon has the fastest one-day double (9.90/19.77). He has also marked the most one-day sub-10/sub-20 doubles in history (at last count, I believe it was 7).
Re: Great DoublersAouita is a good one. How about Geb in the 5k and marathon? Not too shabby.
Rod dixon, 3:33.9 1500, and I belive around 2:09 in the marathon. Not bad for a "big guy".
Re: Great DoublersGreat argument for Boldon and Fredericks. Still, they never dominated their competition as did Lewis and Owens or even Borzov and Morrow. These four guys had double Olympic golds.
Re: Great DoublersAto Boldon one day double 9.90, 19.77
and how about 6'2" and 2:19 by a high schooler Sharon Day in Costa Mesa, CA.
Re: Great DoublersI saw a high school dual meet in 1973 where Lonnie Shelton (Foothill, Bakersfield CA - later Oregon State BB & Supersonics of NBA) went 47-9 in triple, 63-4 in shot, and 185 + change in the discus (plus 9.9y and 14.2y). He woulda/coulda been a great one in decathlon. Actually, basketball was probably his 3rd best sport in HS.
Jim Rorick
Re: Great DoublersFor the shot and discus, Sen Plucknets 233-7 (then a WR), 67-7 from 1981 still ranks as the best one day double
Re: Great DoublersParry O'Brien did very well in the Discus, I believe he was world-ranked a few times in the 50's.
As an aside.... I heard once that Parry O'Brien finished third in the 100 yard dash in the California State High School meet ! Is this true ? Anybody know ? Finally, Randy Matson threw over 200' .
Re: Great DoublersO'Brien well before my time, but don't recall any sprint stories about him.
He was only 3rd in the shot as a Santa Monica High senior in 1949 (55-2 3/4). 100 results: Erbie Schopper 9.9 Larry Williams c10.1 Russ Miller c10.1 Gary Green c10.1 Ronnie Packard c10.2
Re: Great DoublersIf you want a wild Cal State double, how about Woodrow Strode (Jefferson, LA) in 1933, finishing 2nd in the shot and 3rd in the (really!) 220 low hurdles. (DT was discontinued 1933-48, or he may have scored there too, I suspect)
Yep, that's the Woody Strode whom you might remember as the Ethiopian gladiator in "Spartacus" or as "Sargeant Rutledge" or as the bow & arrow guy in "The Professionals." Taciturn, but fine actor, body on loan from god. http://us.imdb.com/Name?Strode,+Woody
Re: Great DoublersOk, one more interesting double story/question, again the shot and the 100:
Billy Cannon, great HB for LSU back in the 50's was also a VERY good sprinter, I think he won the SEC 100. But he also either won the SP or came close ? Any SEC experts out there ?
Re: Great DoublersNow here is an unusual double: the shot and tennis:

Re: Great DoublersDon't think Tommie Smith ran enough 400 to be ranked #2
Re: Great DoublersHey Tracknut Sharon!
Do you know who's competing in the Steve Scott meet tomorrow at UCI? Deciding whether to come down from LA in the probable rain! email is: nmarknaylor@cs.com. Thanks!
Re: Great Doublers>Deciding whether to come down from LA in the probable rain<
Yeah, go for it. Then you could go to Disneyland. Great Double!
Re: Great DoublersInto the 400/800 camp I nominate Blazin' Ben Eastman, the early 1930s Stanford runner who died this year. 46.4y and 1:49+.
Anybody who ever ran on Stanford's Angell Field, when it was dirt and shaped like wiener, has to be astonished that Angell is where Eastman lowered the 440 yard dash record by one full second.
Re: Great DoublersAs far a range goes for a runner, how about Francie Larrieu?
800m: 2:00.22 1500m: 4:05.09 mile: 4:27.52 3000m: 8:50.54 5000m: 15:15.2 10000m: 31:28.92 marathon: 2:27.35 not too shabby!
Re: Great DoublersMaybe there have been too many rabbits for El G to get love on this thread.
15/3k 3:26/7:23 #1/#2
Re: Great DoublersActually, Gail jumped 7-5 as a senior in HS, best of 7-3 in college (University of llinois). Then he DID blow out his right (jumping) knee, and learned to jump off th left leg. He then becae the only person tojump 7-0 off each leg, achieving, I think, 7-1 off his left leg.
Re: Great DoublersI believe Werner Gunthor had a great HJ/SP double. Somebody check on this...6'7/74'7 ??
Re: Great DoublersThanks for mentioning Eastman. I witnessed both his world records in 1932. But I'd probably have to rank Mal Whitfield ahead of him as a 4440/880 doubler.
Re: Great DoublersI still want someone to tell me about Billy Cannon ( All American HB ) and his 100/SP exploits in the SEC meet back about 1960. I think he won both !
Re: Great DoublersThanks for the exact numbers David. I also seem to recall that Gail took an unusaully high number of jumps when he set the high school indoor record. Something like 3 attempts at 6'4", 3 at 6'6", and many more misses on the way to a 7'5" clearance. Can you shed some specifics on this? Thanks.
Re: Great DoublersWhat about?
Maria Mutola 800/1500 John Walker 1.44 800m/3.32 1500m/7.37 3k Marion Jones 100/200 Ron Clarke 5k/10k Murray Halberg Mile/5k/10k Unusal Double: national rep/rec holder in trip jump and weight lifting.

I >think he won both !>> >I still want someone to tell me about Billy >Cannon ( All American HB ) and his 100/SP >exploits in the SEC meet back about 1960. I >think he won both !>> Cannon won the '59 Heisman as LSU senior; in the '60 SEC meet he wasn't in first 5 in either event. In '69, wasn't in first 2 in the 100, was 3rd in the shot. Don't have results of his soph-year SEC at hand.
Re: Great DoublersIrina Privalova: Sprints-400h-Speedskating.
Janis Lusis : Javelin - Decathlon. Joaquim Cruz: 800 - 1500 (As good as Seb in the 800 in my book) Steve Cram 800 - 1500 Herb McKenley 100-200-400
