great T&F namesOK, forgive me, it's late at night. But I was thinking... (if you can call it that) about some great T&F names. High jumper Nathan Leeper has to be high on anyone's list of right-on names. High hurdler Eugene Swift is also right up there. And how about shot putter Dallas Long? Sprinters James Jett and Keisha Jett. Hurdler Rod Jett.
Any others?
Re: great T&F namesLutz Long in the long jump.
Re: great T&F namesBack in high school in New Jersey in the late '70's there was a thrower from Willingboro named Chuck Spinner, and another from Scotch Plains named Mike Hurling
Re: great T&F namesAt one point a group of us had a list of high jumpers who could "jump off themselves."
Dwight Stones, Tom Woods and Juri Tarmak are the ones that come to mind right away.

Dwight Stones, Tom Woods and Juri Tarmak are the ones that come to mind right away.< Benn Fields was another.

Kansas State (Leeper's alma mater) also has/had a female high jumper whose last name was High. T&FN suggested those two get together. Gotta love High-Leeper for a married name. TCU had a sprinter named Steve Slowly. Obviously, he wasn't.
Re: great T&F namesDuring my freshman year we had a couple meets at Coe College (DIII, Iowa) who had this long jumper with the last name of Nakka.
I distinctly recall warming up for the 800/880 and hearing the long jump official holler, "Nakka up, Thompson in the hole!"
Re: great T&F namesI liked these......
Ebanizer Edmonds....SJD sprinter Ivory Crockett...So.Illinois sprinter Handsome Wearing....Villanova hurdler Fair Hooker....Arizona hurdler MacKinley Dillingham...COS sprinter Cyril Pinder....Illinois sprinter Houston McTear...Cerr JC sprinter Eulace Peacock....Temple sprinter/lger Mozell Ellerbee....Tuskegee sprinter
Re: great T&F names>You're forgetting Eugene Swift!<
You're forgetting that Eugene Swift was mentioned in the very first message in this thread.
Re: great T&F names>TCU had a sprinter named Steve Slowly.
>Obviously, he wasn't. And Herschel Walker was definitely a runner.
Re: great T&F namesLarry Walker ('76 Oly) was a walker.
Re: great T&F namesYou gotta think that . . .
Somewhere, at some time, some Furlong must have run the 200, some Quarters the 400, some Half the 800, and some Miles the mile.
Re: great T&F namesHow about Jerry Springer in the high jump?
Paul Walter in the pole vault? George Spearman in the javelin? Ted Turner in the discus throw? Dick Hyman in the pole vault? etc.
Re: great T&F namesBrittney Spears in the javelin.
Re: great T&F names>You gotta think that . . .
Somewhere, at some >time, some Furlong must have run the 200, some >Quarters the 400, some Half the 800, and some >Miles the mile.>> That, of course, would be Miles Irish!
Re: great T&F namesI can't believe I forgot about this one: current UT hurdler Raasin McIntosh! (pronounced like racin')
And by the way, she ran a 12.90 (ties LoLo for fastest in the nation) yesterday in Austin. And supposedly, the 100H isn't even her best event -- she was already leading the 400H list.
Re: great T&F namesBack in 1973 there was a guy who wrote letters to TF&N along with long winded explanations:
One was Hitchkick Hitchcock if Alfred Hitchcock had been a long jumper. When Terry Williams of Lompoc California, then an Oregon recruit, wrote a sarcastic message board like letter to the editor about wanting to start a Eugene branch of the Craig Virgin fan club, He responded "It is too bad there are no Virgins in the freshman class at Oregon."
Re: great T&F namesThat reminds me of Russian high jumper Stepanov.
Re: great T&F namesin the mid to late '60's there was a pretty good discus thrower at Fresno State named Atomic. If I recall correctly he was Atomic Terozian. I always figured he must have been born on the day the bomb was dropped.
Re: great T&F namesThere's a collegian this year named Joshua Sink, who runs for (of all places) Navy.
Re: great T&F namesIn the Midwest Regionals, running in the 200m and 400m, there's a guy named Richard Petty.
His success depend on his pit crew, I guess.
Re: great T&F namesFrom the East Regional, we have Army's Trevor Hopper in the 400m.
An exhausting way to run the race, if you ask me.
Re: great T&F namesYet another from the East Regional . . .
Cornell's Geoff Van Fleet in the 1,500. He was ranked 34th, so he'll need to be fleet to make the 12-man final.
Re: great T&F namesAlthough it wasn't really related too his event, I always liked the name of the French middle distance runner of the early 50s--Robert Chef D'Hotel.
There was a good lacrosse player in my area a few years back whose name was Scott Lacrosse. That might be the best all time sports name. I mean, he was Mr. Lacrosse, every year!
Re: great T&F namesYou could have put together a Third Reich relay team from the West Regional: Gehring, Braun, Komandent and Krauter.
Re: great T&F namesUniversity of Memphis basketball player (and 7 foot HJ in HS) Baskerville Holmes
Re: great T&F namesHow about a former High Jumper and Basketball player for Ole Miss - Tim Jumper
I also trained with a marathoner - James "Crash" Wall. (guy had endurance like you wouldn't believe - no wall crashes in his marathons)
Re: great T&F namessid sink ... steepler in early 70s
