great T&F names

OK, forgive me, it's late at night. But I was thinking... (if you can call it that) about some great T&F names. High jumper Nathan Leeper has to be high on anyone's list of right-on names. High hurdler Eugene Swift is also right up there. And how about shot putter Dallas Long? Sprinters James Jett and Keisha Jett. Hurdler Rod Jett.

Any others?

Back in high school in New Jersey in the late '70's there was a thrower from Willingboro named Chuck Spinner, and another from Scotch Plains named Mike Hurling

At one point a group of us had a list of high jumpers who could "jump off themselves."

Dwight Stones, Tom Woods and Juri Tarmak are the ones that come to mind right away.

Kansas State (Leeper's alma mater) also has/had a female high jumper whose last name was High. T&FN suggested those two get together. Gotta love High-Leeper for a married name.

TCU had a sprinter named Steve Slowly. Obviously, he wasn't.

During my freshman year we had a couple meets at Coe College (DIII, Iowa) who had this long jumper with the last name of Nakka.

I distinctly recall warming up for the 800/880 and hearing the long jump official holler,

"Nakka up, Thompson in the hole!"

And by the way, she ran a 12.90 (ties LoLo for fastest in the nation) yesterday in Austin. And supposedly, the 100H isn't even her best event -- she was already leading the 400H list.

Back in 1973 there was a guy who wrote letters to TF&N along with long winded explanations:

One was Hitchkick Hitchcock if Alfred Hitchcock had been a long jumper.

When Terry Williams of Lompoc California,then an Oregon recruit, wrote a sarcastic message board like letter to the editor about wanting to start a Eugene branch of the Craig Virgin fan club, He responded "It is too bad there are no Virgins in the freshman class at Oregon."

UC Riverside has a high jumper named Jeff Midgett

in the mid to late '60's there was a pretty good discus thrower at Fresno State named Atomic. If I recall correctly he was Atomic Terozian. I always figured he must have been born on the day the bomb was dropped.

There's a collegian this year named Joshua Sink, who runs for (of all places) Navy.

In the Midwest Regionals, running in the 200m and 400m, there's a guy named Richard Petty.

His success depend on his pit crew, I guess.

He was ranked 34th, so he'll need to be fleet to make the 12-man final.

Although it wasn't really related too his event, I always liked the name of the French middle distance runner of the early 50s--Robert Chef D'Hotel.

There was a good lacrosse player in my area a few years back whose name was Scott Lacrosse. That might be the best all time sports name. I mean, he was Mr. Lacrosse, every year!
