Been there, done that twice -- and highly recommend it. Provides an entirely new perspective on altitude training even if you're just carrying a 40 pound pack and trekking the Annapurna Circuit (about 200 miles/15 days, goes from 500m to 5415m altitude in the shadows of 8000m+ peaks). Despite the poverty (annual income less than $200US) and the fact that walking is the primary means of transportation, you'll see a lot of Nepalis in Kathmandu and Pokhara, running at dawn just for exercise and teams training at the national stadium. Don't look for them to be a world power anytime soon, however.
