The ONLY thing I knew about him two years ago was that the Dems had pegged him as an up-and-comer (Keynote Address speaker in the 2004 DNC, and that was only because of his skills as an orator) and that he was considered very liberal. McCain was a known commodity and his war-record alone would have merited my vote at the time.
Note that the poll only includes 600 voters, so on average 12 voters per state. As the article only talks about the electoral college we might have 7:5 split for McCain in each state (Some states might have as few as two of three people polled in this study!). If that were the case I'm unsure if that is a major shift from then to now.
