What a great video! My Dutch friend goes back 'there' every year at Christmas (where St. Nick became Sinterklaas, which became Santa Claus) and he does indeed refer to it as Holland.

So here's the trivia question: last year I learned (here) that the country I have always referred to as The Ukraine, is just Ukraine . . . is Holland properly called The Netherlands or just Netherlands (hint: Wiki has it both ways!).

Without looking at the attachment, etc. it has always been my understanding that Holland is a province in the country of Netherlands... same as England and United Kingdom. Now I'll go read the attachment stuff !

Actually its a bit more complicated than that. Netherlands has been known by more codenames than any other NOC. These codes started in 1952 and from 1952-64 were only assigned by the Organizing Committees (COJOs/OCOGs), not the IOC. The IOC started assigning 3-letter codes in 1968. Since 1952 the Netherlands has had the following codenames:

1952S HOL
1952W NED
1956E HOL
1956W OLA
1960S PBA
1960W NET
1964S NLD
1964W NL
1968-1988 HOL
1992-2012 NED
