Flavor of the week: the "public ranking" of the top collegiate football player has now devolved into which QB (or rarely a RB) on the best team—or a team that just scored a big win—did well last weekend.

As a writer noted in my paper this morning

<<Just a reminder: The consensus top four preseason Heisman Trophy candidates were USC quarterback Matt Barkley, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson and West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith.>>

Last week it was Kenjon Barner....

The kid's only a RS frosh and has already achieved legendary status at A&M. He's definitely someone to watch, altho how he'll further develop remains to be seen.

If he can stay out of prison. He had a borderline hate crime this past summer that TAMU got rid of for him and had a felony arrest in his hometown brushed away by the local DA right before he went to college. He is extremely talented but his stupidity may get the best of him.

Where his friend used a slur and Manziel ended up fighting?

aha, and like any good legend, I see from that article there's doubt about his birthdate (and even which state he's from!)

In the clip above, ESPN did it way better than they ever could have for themselves.

And I now say "bullshit". Shortly after I posted that, the Aggies sent out 8 tweets promoting his candidacy for the Heisman, including one tbat belittled the credentials of another candidate.

So now JM is THE prohibitive favorite for the Heisman?!
I'd give it to the KsSt QB.

This thread is perfect evidence for why the Heisman has become so completely irrelevant. It's an award that now simply goes to the QB doing best at the end of the season for a highly rated team.

K-St ? The basketball school ? Get real, man.
Who would possibly be his competition ? Some LB who's not even an edge-rusher ?
And JM did break the former Heisman winners record in his conference, right ? No justice
here if JM doesn't win this award in a landslide.

Then the winner of the Heisman is Nick Florence of Baylor with 389 yards of total offense per game.
