movies with the most perfect ratings....IMDB has ratings by the great unwashed, not "experts," and the age demographic I think is skewed a bit on the young side (not that geezers can't screw up voting as badly as the kiddies; just means that historically a lot of graeat movies are probably overlooked because of lack of traffic).
Here's a composite of the leaders of those that have received 10s (not sure I've ever given any movie a 10). The leader is Shawshank Redemption. http://www.imdb.com/list/WVdUnOcGovo/
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....This really is a list from the unwashed rabble.
In the top 10 I would only recommend Shawshank and The Godfather. Fight Club? Inception? Ptoeey! Game of Thrones (#19) is a terrific TV series, but how does it qualify as a movie? As for WWII films, Inglourious Basterds finishes ahead of Casablanca? This list reminds me of the old SNL quiz show skits where the contestant had to guess the answer which the audience of idiots picked.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....No Deer Hunter? Caddyshack? Airplane?
Pah!
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
Most ironically, The Usual Suspects finishes ahead of Casablanca! Nonsense, of course.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....Isn't this like asking the sheeple to rank the greatest celebrities of the last 100 years?
Vox populi does not equate with quality or depth, merely: popular. It's like that silly thread about the most popular T&F athlete. Occasionally popular and quality meet, but rarely. In the meantime we can pick our own faves for our own reasons. I find that if I like a movie, more often than not the critics like it, but too often I also find that critic's choices can leave me scratching my head. Especially if it is an "ART" film. This year I hated: "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "Moonrise Kingdom," movies the critics liked.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....Too bad Marlow is "on vacation" I know he'd like to weigh in.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
A ridiculous list. Completely random. More like, try to name 100 movies. Frankly, I am always surprised at the love The Shawshank Redemption gets. I watched it once and found it a rather depressing movie. The ending is fine, but so unrealistic. And watching 2 hours of some guy who got railroaded to prison, when the same thing happens in reality all the time without the happy ending, was fine once but not again. If it had the same ending as Paul Muni in I Am Fugitive From A Chain Gang, a great and horrific film, I doubt anyone would have watched it.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....wow... talk about a topic that lays bare age-related bias.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
That was kinda my reaction too. Occasionally, Marlow and I agree on the merits of a film/movie but rave reviews by big-time pros (no offense, Marlow) almost guarantees that I will bored/mystified/disappointed. Conversly, I frequently see and enjoy movies only to subsequently learn from reviewers what a terrible movie it was. On balance, if the reviewers love it, I won't.. and vice versa..
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....Four B&W films. Two not surprising: Citizen Kane and Casablanca, and of course the violent Hitchcock film Psycho. But 12 Angry Men is a surprise.
And The Hangover is 100. Ahead of The Third Man? Ugh.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....Speaking of being railroaded to jail, Errol Morris has been looking into the Jeffrey MacDonald murder case, of Fatal Vision fame from 1970. Needless to say he has a different look on the case.
Reading this book made me physically ill, as the author surely intended. “I am repulsed by the fabrication of a case from incomplete knowledge, faulty analysis and the suppression of evidence,” Mr. Morris writes. “Repulsed and disgusted.” http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/11/books ... wanted=all
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
You may not have liked Hangover, but note that a new study, based on laughs per minute, rates it as the second funniest movie ever made (behind Airplane). I've started a separate thread.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....Batman, any of them, made the top 100? Top-100?
Terminator 2 is on a top 500 list? Never forgave people who robbed Hanks (Cast Away) for Crowe (Gladiator)! Inception?
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....After many years, I finally got around to watching Shawshank last night. Wonderful movie, but certainly not among my all-time "greats."
I do note that its IMDB rating (now down to 9.2, tied w/ Godfather) isn't remotely a small sampling: is based on the evaluation of more than 800,000 respondents. (not that there isn't such a thing as group stupidity of course)
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
There are so many ways to rank movies. This is IMDB’s top 10 1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 2. The Godfather (1972) 3. The Godfather: Part II (1974) 4. Pulp Fiction (1994) 5. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 6. 12 Angry Men (1957) 7. Schindler's List (1993) 8. The Dark Knight (2008) 9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King(2003) 10. Fight Club (1999) This is the AFI’s Top 10 (movies made 1957 or later, to reflect IMDB’s bias) 1. THE GODFATHER 1972 2. RAGING BULL 1980 3. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA 1962 4. SCHINDLER'S LIST 1993 5. VERTIGO 1958 6. STAR WARS 1977 7. PSYCHO 1960 8. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY 1968 9. THE GRADUATE 1967 10. CHINATOWN 1974 Of the movies listed above, these are my top 5 favorites 1. Dark Knight 2. Lord of the Rings 3. Psycho 4. Graduate 5. Fight Club Of the movies listed above, these are the top 5 “best-made” films IMO (technical merit as ‘art’) 1. Schindler’s List 2. Godfather 3. Raging Bull 4. Lord of the Rings 5. The Graduate
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
There are some movies that seem to "grow on you". Some you think are good initially then years later think they are dumb. Others, the opposite. I like Shawshank when I first saw it. Years later I like it better. If I stumble upon it on TV, I have a hard time turning the channel. It probably would be in my all time top 10 list.
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....It's all about taste.
Hmm..all this talk about vox populi, unwashed masses, hoi poloi, etc...no wonder this board is thought of as a bunch of elitist, snobbish white guys. The cream of the crop resides here! WOO!
Re: movies with the most perfect ratings....
Not so much on the all-honkey (there's Injuns, colored folk, Pollacks, and even gasp, Canadians!) . . . but elitist snobs? Ubetcha!
