Basketball Nicknames ( and 2 Hockey )

Postby dukehjsteve » Tue Sep 04, 2012 12:33 pm

OK, ok, some of these are too easy to even answer, but some of the others might be fun. Here goes:

Easy E.
Sweetwater
Bad News
Jungle J..
Dollar B...
C.... the Glide
Dr. J ( ( too easy)
Tommy Gun
The Big E
Pistol P... ( another too easy)
E...the Pearl (diito)
The Big O ( easiest of all )
Slick
Dick the Great G.... ( more famous in baseball but attended a fine college)

and 2 easy hockey:

The Rocket
Pocket Rocket

I'd like to see some more basketballs from others....

I stay away from roundball (Pro) but know all but the first.

Hockey ... Maurice and Henri Richard. My fav' hockey nic is "Killer" who was about 160 lbs. and wore skates a size (or two) too small for max acceleration.

A few off-beat ones that begin "the:"

Le Crocodile -Ten
The Florida Fatboy -Golf
The Smiling Snake - Bb
The Pearl of the Pampas - Ten

le Crocodile is Rene ( ? ) LaCoste... who became the Shirt Guy. And the shirts with that nasty looking animal on them became known as "alligator shirts" rather than by the proper name !

Interestingly, there were two Bad News Barnes guys about a decade apart. Jim, whose college I would have to look up and Marvin at Providence, whose point guard was Ernie DiGregorio.

Easy Ed MacCauley
Sweetwater - Nat Clifton
Jim Bad News Barnes who was one of three 1st Round picks the Knicks had in 1964.
Jungle Jim Luscutoff
Dollar Bill Bradley
C.... the Glide Drexler
Dr. J ( ( too easy)
Tommy Gun - Tom Heinsohn
The Big E - Elvin Hayes
Pistol P... ( another too easy)
E...the Pearl (diito)
The Big O ( easiest of all )
Slick - Donald Earl "Slick" Watts
Dick the Great G.... ( more famous in baseball but attended a fine college) - Dick Groat

Marvin Bad News Barnes brings to mind another tall hoopster. Which 7'0" NBA player donned a mask and tried to rob a store? The clerk said, “I know that’s you, Reggie,” to which he replied, “It ain’t me, man.”
