There's been a lot of posturing and bad faith on both sides. The authorities (MTA, Governor, and Mayor) have shown arrogance and disrespect in a number of ways throughout the process. But the Union has to understand that it cannot stand alone in resisting pension erosion, especially when they are no longer underpaid, compared to comparable wage earners in the private sector.
There have been many collateral victims of the strike. These include not only people who had to endure serious inconvenience in getting to work, but also business owners whose businesses suffered significantly, and their workers, who could ill afford their loss of income but who were not themselves on strike.
Everyone hopes that this thing can be settled without further service disruption.
