Sometimes you have to crack a few eggs...

...to make a good omlet.

What track fans should hope for is that the new scandal blows the lid off and several big names take a tumble. The sport will survive and hopefully the cleaner for it. This first wave began in 1989 after Ben Johnson when out of competition testing began. This, coupled with the fall of the Soviet block, curtailed performances in many events. Remember, that the world records in most women's events (100,200,400,800,110H,LJ,HJ,SP,DT,Hept,4x100,4x400) were set prior to '89. It will certainly disappoint fans of athletes who won and confound results from 2000 Olympics, several world championships & perhaps earlier.

What track (and other sports) needs to do is to eliminate any statute of limitations on disqualification for drug cheating. Take blood samples of athletes at the Olympics and freeze them. If an athlete wins the shot put gold in 2004 and we find via a test in 2011 that he took a designer steriod...then poof...no more gold medal...we just hope that the tests can uncover designer steriods before the athlete has died of a long, painful, cancerous death from their steroid use.
