Where Does the Money Come From

Postby Donley » Thu Oct 23, 2003 7:34 pm

Where would athletes like John McEwen or Kevin Toth come up with the reported several thousand dollars a month these designer steroids cost. Or would you guess that they cut them a break on price in order to use them as advertising bait for other customers?

According to the story on another thread, the Outside writer who did the guinea pig route said his package cost $7500 for 8 months, so that's less than $1000 a month, not several thousand. And that was for 4 drugs, of which I suspect EPO and HGH are more expensive than steroids. So maybe you could get THG for a couple of hundred bucks.

Then there's also the consideration that if (and I emphasize the IF part) BALCO indeed was supplying it, and guys were wearing ZIMA hats they might get it free as part of an "advertising promotion" for the company's legal products (if THG is indeed illegal). IF.

You're confusing Zima (the awful-tasting "clear beer" of a few years back) with ZMA. Anyway, here's something to wonder about -- who creates these designer steroids, and will they contintue to do so?

The creator(s) couldn't ever patent their drugs, and so the only way they can financially benefit is the black market. If this bust stays a one-shot deal then there will certainly remain a benefit to creating them, but if not the risk/reward ratio would get smaller.

The guy in the story was not using secret designer steroids that were specially made to avoid detection. The number I have seen floating around for THG is that a 2 month supply cost ~ $15,000

And pray tell just where have you seen this $15,000 figure "floating around"? Idle internet chatter or in a story that you can point us all to. Has the whole world become one giant National Enquirer?
