Shotput trivia q.q.: what Shot WR setter weighed 111 pounds less than the previous recordholder? (a trivia question that should be asked, even if it hasn't much to do with anything...)
Re: Shotput trivia q.Almost certainly Charles Fonville, who succeeded Jack Torrance
Re: Shotput trivia q.Certain to be Fonville. Coached by Ken Doherty, who was a great advocate of speed/quickness over bulk/strength. Also coached Bill Watson (LJ/SP/Dec) at Michigan.
Re: Shotput trivia q.I think it was Charles Fonville because he was 200lbs. if he was lucky. But Ralph Rose was a monster at something like 6'5" and 280lbs. but I doubt that Jack Torrance was 111lbs. under him but Fonville weighed far less then both of them.
58'3 1/4" ( or what ever it was) is not a bad toss for a sprinter.
Re: Shotput trivia q.Fonville was supposedly 193 lb when he set record (58' 1/4", 1948). Torrance was said to weigh 304 (57'1, 1934). In '42, football great Al Blozis had an unofficial (7th attempt) 57'9 1/4 at a Madison Sq.Garden meet.
