Ivy League Miler / 1500 list

Postby BillCarr » Mon Jun 09, 2003 7:57 am

this is slightly conference specific, but here goes anyway

this is the 1500 list Top5 (All-Time) for what I can find . . .

Denis Fikes Pennsylvania (1974) 3:37.14
Greg Whiteley Brown (1989) 3:40.06
William Burke Princeton (1991) 3:40.78
Rob Cunningham Cornell (1993) 3:41.48
Greg Keller Navy (1993) 3:41.99

however, that 3:37.14 I believe is 3:37.0h, which mysteriously smells like 18 seconds off of Mr. DECF's 3:55 monster race in 1974. Pursuing this line of thought, should "the other guy," Karl Thornton of Penn, be added to this 1500 list with his 3:57.x - 18 seconds ?

is it possible someone actually took Denis' 1500 split for real while he was running that race ? does anyone know if he ran a 3:37.0 in a real 1500 race ? I feel like I'm robbin a fellow Pennsylvanian (Thornton) here . . .

That 1500 is undoubtedly a conversion of Fikes's 3:55.0. As for Thornton, his best mile as an undergradutate was 4:00.8 for 6th in the AAU at Eugene, 6/26/71.

P.S. for Sully: Thornton was from upper New York State in high school (Rochester area, I believe.)

Didn't Adam Dixson run sub 3:40? I know he ran some mean 1000's.

Stating the obvious, what about Craig Masback? Princeton grad and Yale law is about as Ivy League as one can get. Are you only considering undergraduate times? His mile record at Princeton is listed at 4:01.8. That would not convert to make the top 5 list, but his post-graduate times would.

Sorry, I guess I didn't qualify my original statement, these times are in college uniforms only. Obviously Mr. Masback would make a true all-time PR list from the Ivies.

Adam Dixon did have an amazing 1000m time
2:19.79 at the 1981 H-Y-P meet . . . but his college PR in the 1500 was 3:43.02 (behind Cliff Sheehan) and 4:01 in the mile

Mr. DJ, so when I see this on athletes under 4:00 in 1974:

1974
63. Mike Slack
(unat)...........3:59.7i....(1)..Fargo.............Jan 26
64. Reed Fischer (Tx)...........*3:59.9i...(5)..Houston...........Feb 9
65. Greg Gibson (Wa)............*3:59.1i...(3)..San Diego.........Feb 16
66. Paul Cummings (BYU).........*3:56.4....(1)..Tempe.............Mar 16
67. Steve Wheeler (Duke)........*3:59.4....(1)..Raleigh...........Apr 20
68. Denis Fikes (Penn)..........*3:55.0....(2)..Philadelphia......Apr 27
69. Karl Thornton (Penn)........*3:57.9....(4)..Philadelphia......Apr 27
70. Bruce Fischer (UCTC)........*3:58.5....(3)..Wichita...........Jun 1
71. Ted Castaneda (Co)..........*3:58.5....(4)..Wichita...........Jun 1
72. Keith Palmer (KsSt).........*3:59.2....(5)..Wichita...........Jun 1
73. Jeff Schemmel (KsSt)........3:59.4.....(6)..Wichita...........Jun 1

(apologies in advance for the formatting)

Mr. Thornton was not running for Penn at that time?

Correct. Karl Thornton was Philadelphia T&FC in '74, having been graduated from Penn in '72.

Fikes's best 1500 in college was 3:52.7 in a quadrangular meet in Cork, Ireland, in June '74. I doubt he ever ran a 1500m in this country while he was in college.

thanks. everything suddenly makes sense.

this explains why Penn #2 is Thornton in 3:42.94
4:00.8 + .14 - 18 = 3:42.94

unfortunately, it just misses Cliff Sheehan's 3:42.44 (4:00.3 really ?) for the Top 8 chart

problem solved

Harvard's Jim Baker ran a 4:00.2 mile in '68 at the IC4A but not sure where this fits in the list.

When Shorter was at Yale, did he ever run the mile or 1500 ? I remember that he doubled at the NCAA one year in the 5 and 10.

Masback ran mostly 800 (and even 4x400) at Princeton. He did not even run cross country in high school and initially went out for soccer as a freshman at Princeton before switching over to xc.
