Movie/Art Bragg

Postby Dixon » Fri Sep 20, 2013 12:08 am

Art Bragg was a great sprinter back in the 50's, injuries cost him his Olympic shot.

Anyway...

I'm watching this movie, there they are sitting on a bar stool talking. We can hear the bar TV talking about Morgan States Art Bragg running a 9.5 in the 100 yard dash. Damn if I can remember the name of the movie or much about it other than that? I know I didn't dream this 8-)

Anyone familiar with this?

I haven't any idea but if seems as if you should concentrate on movies set in the early 1950s around Baltimore. For example, one of those black and white Pimlico heist movies that Sterling Hayden appeared in.
More recent films might be "Avalon" or that movie where Joe Mantegna was the father who owned a strip club that was told from the prospective of his son.

A buddy at work traded some movies with me for a few months. A good 30 or so, it was one of those. These were older movies.

Duh, the racetrack heist movie STERLING HAYDEN starred in was Stanley Kubrick's "The KILLING" -- set @ BAY MEADOWS racetrack in California, not PIMLICO.

Thanks for the correction fastpete. It's been a long time since I saw the movie.
Since Barry Levinson is the most Baltimore oriented director I can think of - actually the only one, I can't help but think that it was one of his movies.
By the way, I once saw Sterling Hayden walking along the street in Manhattan. He had a cane but was using it as a walking stick, and dressed the way George Bernard Shaw looked in some of the old pictures, in tweeds and knickers. It was quite a sight to see him striding along.

Couldn't have been Repo Man, which was set in Baltimore, w/ Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen's Son, wasn't it?

I think that's the hip one that shows a generic 7-11 type convenience story plastered w/ window signs slyly proclaiming such generics as "Food".

I've posted about running at Morgan State in the 50s, even making it into the Eastern AAU 100 yd. Final, won by Ed Waters in 9.5.
