Birthday Problem

Postby LopenUupunut » Tue Jun 18, 2013 8:11 am

Today's birthday quiz features two Olympic champions who won their gold medals in the same event eight years apart.

Athlete A was born 111 years ago today (Tuesday) and won his Olympic gold with a new world record, beating a teammate who placed second. Athlete A's son also became an athlete; he improved the national shot put record many times and is still active as a coach and meeting organizer.

Athlete B was born 101 years ago today and won his Olympic gold with a new world record, beating teammates who placed second and third. After his Olympic success he had a brief movie career.

The two athletes are not from the same country. Athlete B died in 1974; athlete A died in 1980. Can you give me their names?

Well done, JumboElliott.

Paavo Yrjölä had to do the hurdles twice en route to winning Olympic decathlon gold in 1928, one of the hurdles having been misplaced the first time around. (That the hurdles weren't one of his best events in the first place didn't help.) Matti Yrjölä, his son, broke the Finnish shot put record some fifteen times. (In addition, Iivari Yrjölä, Paavo's brother, was also an Olympic decathlete.)

Glenn Morris, the 1936 champion, appeared as Tarzan in Tarzan's Revenge in 1938, besides a couple more minor acting roles.

I enjoy them too, even though I could not figure out the answers with unlimited research. :)
