1986 CA CIF State Meet b4x400m (video)

Below is a grainy, amateur nighttime video of the boy's 4x400m from the 1986 CA CIF State Meet final held at 20.50 on Sat, 7-June 1986, at Cerritos College (Norwalk, CA). Though fuzzy, it is one to watch if you get excited about good racing and close finishes.

Keep your eyes peeled on Hawthorne, the team in red and yellow. This was the first season post-Henry Thomas, who'd anchored them to the still-standing 3.07,40 NR set in Texas in '85. Hawthorne had run 3.14,35 to win heat one with Duarte winning the following heat in 3.14,73, with six teams breaking 3.16 in qualifications in the two heats.

This wound up being a Northern CA vs Southern CA final, with So. Cal taking spots 1 and 2, Bay Area teams taking 3, 4, 5, and Southern California schools taking the 6-8, with 9th a DNF (also from Southern California).

American High School's Steve Lewis (grade-11), the 400m state champ earlier in the day at 46,59 (46,50 in his heat), ran a 45,7 anchor to bring his team in at a stil-standing school record of 3.16,12.

Two boys sprinters from this meet (Lewis, 400m & 4x400m; and Watts, 100m/200m/4x100m) would go on to Olympic 400m glory (Lewis in 1988, and Watts in 1992).
