NCAA 4x1 trivia, decathlon division

Postby gh » Fri May 17, 2013 9:59 pm

who's the only 8000-point decathlete to run on a 4x1 in the NCAA finals?

Clue: in that race, 3 of 8 anchors had/would get Olympic medals.

Wouldn't surprise if it were Rafer Johnson, who had the speed, if NCAA held "4 x 100" back then (I doubt they even had a 440 Relay or I might've been there for USC). Tommy Smith would've been in the mix, too.

first NCAA 4x1 wasn't until '64 (and there were no Olympic medalists in the final)

Ashton Eaton could have helped Oregon's 4x100.
Chris Huffins, Cal ?

OK, so now you need to name the 3 anchors who were Olympic medalists.

Interestingly enough, none of them were gold medalists, but there was a gold medalist running a third leg.

And, those 4 medalists won Olympic medals in 4 different events.

Hmmm... I know when Rice was 2nd in '69 John Carlos anchored for SJSU. No idea who the others might have been!

Frater / Gatlin and someone from Arkansas would be my guess

Frater, Gatlin and Gay. My guess for 3 of the 4

I don't believe any of those three gentlemen were even alive in 1969.

Think Hodge was at UCLA in 68-69 ?
Relay runners - Carlos, Tommie Smith, Jim Hines, Lennox Miller, Don Quarrie, Rod Milburn.

Yes, Hodge was running at UCLA in 1969. I would guess the anchors would be Carlos, Lennox Miller, and Wayne Collett (who ran with Hodge). The gold medalist is probably Ronnie Ray Smith who ran the second leg in Mexico City.

My answer was wrong but it was a better guess than it might appear.

Hardee ran the 4x100 for Mississippi State in 2004. The team did not make the finals but their heat time of 39.70 was faster than 7th / 8th place in the finals.

That final had had Frater , Gay & Spearmon.
