Sir Francis Drake

Happy birthday today (Wednesday) to an Olympic champion who was born 98 years ago today.
Next month will mark 20 years since our birthday athlete died.
This isn't the first time we have honored this athlete.
Our birthday person graduated from high school and college in California.
Winning the NCAA championships and the Olympic gold medal in the same year, this champion was not a field event athlete.
Only 21 years old when this person won the Olympic gold medal, our birthday athlete died at the age of 78.
Godfrey Brown was second to our birthday athlete at the Olympic Games.
Who is this champion?

Quite easy to narrow this down to 1 of three guys, ( assuming it's a guy and not just a relayist) but it's silly to make a 33 % guess so I'll pass.

LopenUupunut, you got it. Archie Williams was born 98 years ago this day. Of course you know that Archie won the gold medal in Berlin at 400 meters. Archie died on the 24th of June in 1993 at the age of 78.

Archie Williams taught for many years at Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo (Marin County, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge). I believe he was a math teacher and a very popular faculty member at Sir Francis Drake High.
