Tommie Smith at 400m

I believe if Tommie Smith had specialized in the 400m, he would have been the first
to break 43.00 and that record would still stands today.

What's your thoughts?

Who could disagree? I expected him to be in the thick of the discussion over Bolt vs. Hayes; I'd put TS there, too, even if the San Jose sprinters did have their share of "modern" sprint technique from Bud Winter.

I watched him go for the 440 WR one windy day at SJS, but the wind was too much. That was a few years before Lee Evans upped the work ethic to develop all that strength down the homestretch.
[Actually, USC's Mike Larrabee had already shown the way as to "work"; he'd run his repeat ("Interval") 330s by starting out on the 150 yd. stretch w/ us Sprinters and just keep going at the same pace as we pulled up to stroll back for our own, lazier versions of Intervals.]
