I don't know if he is 1 or 2, but Gerry Ashworth would be one of the other Dartmouth Gold medal winners – Member, 1964 USA winning 4 x 100 relay team.

I would bet the Dartmouth site is wrong. They have long claimed F. Morgan Taylor as one of theirs, even though he transferred to Grinnell after one semester and before he'd ever run track for Dartmouth!

Thanks, dj, that is what I figured. I initially looked up the Dartmouth site and saw an extra Oly gold medalist. After looking a little further, I saw that he actually competed for Grinnell. Wasn't sure what the true story was. A bit of resume padding by an Ivy?

#1 would be Earl Thompson (Canada) ? He set WR 14.4y at 1920 IC4A, then won gold later
that summer (.4 slower...!). Arthur Shaw also set a WR (15.2y, 1908) while at Dartmouth, but
placed 3rd at London Olympics that year (.6 slower!) Hurdling wasn't as consistent back then,
apparently.

Tracks weren't as consistent back then, and bad weather affected them far more.

Thompson must have gotten lots of frequent-train miles: born in Saskatchewan, graduates from Long Beach Poly, wins NCAA for Dartmouth (after starting at USC), ends up as coach at Navy!

I recall reading in the T&FN 1956 Olympic issue that Triple Jump silver medalist Vilhjalmur Einarsson of Iceland stated that he was a graduate of Dartmouth. ( Just checked.. it's there in last paragraph of the 3J report, page 23) Is this true ? Did he ever compete for them ?

I think he was at Dartmouth for 2 years. Must have been 1955-1956, prior to the Olympics. Known as Willie Einarsson. Only lost by a couple of inches to da Silva in Melbourne!

He competed for Dartmouth, but as a long jumper (the TJ wasn't a regular part of the college program at the time).

Also contested at Penn Relays, where he was 3rd (48-11 1/4) behind Bill Sharpe of West Chester State Teachers College and Ira Davis of La Salle College. At the Olympics they finished 2nd, 4th and 11th.
