Heres an item from the Chicago Daily Tribune, Aug. 22, 1922:

MRS. MURCHISON ASKS DIVORCE
St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 21--Suit for divorce was filed in Circuit court today against Loren Murchison, star sprinter of the Illinois A.C. of Chicago, by Geneva Murchison, who alleges he was more devoted to athletics than to her.

That is who I thought of when I saw the name Murchison.. then noted the date, 1922, could be his Ira's father.

Loren was caucasian, and Ira was not. Both won relay Olympic gold medals - Loren in 1920 and 1924, and Ira in 1956.

As far as track fans are concerned, my wife sees them as ranging from almost normal (DJ, GH, myself occasionally) to anorak clad train spotters.

scarier than an anorak-clad train spotter are the (for lack of a better word) "airframe geeks."

I was once travelling between baseball games with some NBC types and while in the waiting area, one of their frequent-flyer cameramen pulled out a notepad and started checking the fuselage numbers on the planes outside:

"Ahh... 692-LTD; skidded off a runway at O'Hare in July of '87.... 411-XBY; left aileron came off between Dallas and New Orleans, August of '93...."

Only slightly unsettling!

Aircraft spotting is a massive hobby across the entire Earth. It is a kind of collector's hobby where people look for aircraft at various airports and document or photograph what they find. Aircraft spotters will often visit airports whenever they travel and spend time watching aircraft movements, the information they gather is often uploaded into databases or forums where other spotters share what they find.

a few years after the bitter divorce and ... with two gold medals from 1920 and 1924 (4x100) he goes into 1925 and .....

... In 1925 Murchison was struck with spinal meningitis and paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life.[1]

If memory serves me, some embarrassing information about US government actions not in accordance with international treaties were discovered by these types of seemingly innocuous information exchanges about airplanes.
