Question About 1981 USA vs East Germany Meet at Lubeck?

Postby IndianaRunner » Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:47 pm

I'm trying to confirm the following performance that appears in Indiana's Best, a compilation of the all-time performances of Indiana HS athletes. However, I'm not having much luck finding anything about it, so I'm looking to the collective wisdom here:

46' 06.50 - Karen Nitsch - 12 - Perry Meridian HS - US-DDR, Lubech, Germany - 1981

I assume this is junior dual meet. However, the only thing I could find in Track & Field News for Nitsch, is she was listed in the November 1981 issue at 46' 3... which doesn't match the 46' 06.50 above, so might have been from a different meet?

in short, any help on this meet and Nitsch's actual mark?

There was no Junior match between the USA and East Germany in 1981 - the first match between the 2 was at senior level in 1982. Nitsch wasn't in the top-6 in the AAU juniors, so her seasonal best (46'3 per Track Newsletter) was a US meet, and a small one at that. She doesn't appear in the senior list which went to 46'2, but a couple of weeks later was shown in the junior list. This means that it's likely that women's HS expert Mike Kennedy is probably the only person on the planet who knows the venue and date

Thanks for the great information, rhymans, which confirms my own research that the earliest dual between the two countries was in 1982, not 1981. Perhaps the mark in Indiana's Best was from 1982...Nitsch would still be a freshman at Wisconsin University and might have made the junior team that year? If so, it shouldn't be in Indiana's Best which is high school performances only.

As for the 46' 3 that appeared in T&FN, Mike Kennedy sounds like a great resource, but I tried contacting him twice at the e-mail address link via the T&FN website (mkentrk@aol.com) and it got returned as undeliverable both times. Does anybody know an alternative way to contact him?

Thanks again!

Added the city location for this meet in the original post...according to Indiana's Best it was at Lubech, Germany (I think the correct spelling is actually Lubeck).

Again, it doesn't appear that Nitsch threw there in 1981, but maybe knowing the city will help jog someone's memory on what year she actually threw 46' 06.50 in East Germany!

Well Lubeck, or rather Lübeck in German spelling, is located in former West-Germany. So, definitely no GDR-match there.

As was mentioned, the 1982 dual US-GDR dual match was at the senior level, and Nitsch was not a part of that National Team.

She also was not a part of the Junior National Team in 1982, as the rules in that year limited women competitors to those born no earlier than 1964 (Nitsch was born in 1963).

Her best mark in 1982 is listed as 47-9 for 8th at the AIAW Championships held at College Station.

Sorry, still no help in verifying a HS mark farther than 46-3.
