Never saw this race before. Fascinating to watch. What is the converted time? I am sure it would be in the 21.5+ region.

Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)wow!! the queen looks so 'sculpted' in this video, her body and her hairdo are simply awsome lol!! i dare say we will never see a 21.6 in a grand prix race again, the only possibility is allyson in a major final, i cant see VCB bettering 21.74 at this stage, but i would love to be proved wrong.
I think this performance gives merlene the edge over Gwen at 200m - she definately stands above gwen over 100m however at 200m they are much more evenly matched, and unfortunately for merlene gwen dominated her so badly in 1995 that when you think about their career head to head '95 really sticks out, especially for me the race in monaco where gwen ran 21.81, dragging privalova to 21.87 - merlene got completely left on the bend and came in 22.13 she came back to take the upper hand in '96, but we know what happened in atlanta, just heartbreaking. i think the most vivid memory of the olympics i will take to my grave is the sheer desperation in stuart storeys commentary of the womens 200m final when perec came past merlene, utter disbelief!
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)wow you guys are quick. I uploaded that video last week after seeing someone on this board comment that he feels Alyson Felix is going to run 21.56 in the 200m in London. I wanted to put into perspective a similar type race...21.66 into -1.0 m/s is phenomenal and I highly doubt we'll see Alyson or anyone even getting into the 21.6's...
Is Alyson really that much better than Gwen Torrence? Similar 400 PRs, Gwen had a lot more foot speed and her 200m PR was 21.72. Can't see Felix going faster than that unless she has a very favorable wind. Back to Merlene, I would love to see some of the 1995 races but sadly that is one season that is not in my collection. Her 21.64 the year after was also epic.
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)you need an old TV card so you can digitise it to show it at good quality
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)
Are you expecting to die within the next few years? Because otherwise I don't see how you can make a claim about NEVER seeing a similarly fast race again.
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)
If he is in Jamaica I'm willing to lend him such a tv card; material like this should be taken off of tape as soon as possible.
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)I have every championship since 1990 on tape !! i need to get round to copying to DVD but every time i start i just end up watching it and getting nothing done
There is a massive pile in the middle of my living room at the moment and i've bought about 75 DVD i might get it done by 2016
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)If you watch the 1996 final enough times maybe The Queen will eventually win
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)A word of warning re: transferring to DVD...blank DVDs are famously unreliable. I started to digitise some of my old VHS tapes of athletics a couple of years ago and when I went to play some back, despite them working perfectly at the time, I now get a shedload of errors- some skip whole events, some don't play at all. Thank god I've kept my actual tapes (and the actual machine to play them on!) I think if you then convert from DVD to computer file, you should be fine as you can back them up etc etc, but just don't rely solely on DVDs, that's all I'm-a-sayin...
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)
Don't worry the VHS is going nowhere
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)I generally just skim the topics on the current events forum page to see updated times and winning results from recent meets, so this damn near gave me a heart attack. I know she still competes, so for a few seconds I really thought she JUST ran 21.66.
With all of the recent success of Jamaican male and female sprinters it's easy to forget how great Ottey was. Thanks for posting the video.
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)The following year in 1991, Ottey ran 21.64 in Brussels. Here is the video
Great race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EvOjxxP ... playnext=1
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)
That link points to her 21.66 in 1990....?
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)
*cough*
Re: Merlene Ottey 21.66(wind -1.0)
lol ive just realised how rediculous that statement is, especially after Allyson proved me wrong within a matter of weeks lol. is the 21.56 that was laughed at by flying pigeon looking more realistic now?
