Sub 4 minute mile on the track in flats

Postby wineturtle » Thu May 05, 2011 2:51 pm

Has anyone run a sub4 mile on the track in flats?
I'm sure a bunch of guys could but did anyone do it.
This question all started when I read Ryan Hall was attempting to run a sub4 in the Twin Cities Road Mile. If he does I could see him wanting to get an official one on the track and wondered about injury/harm going from flats to spikes . I guess we must take another step and think about barefoot sub 4 minute miles. .. I better stop thinking before we get to thinking about nude co-ed beer mile videos.

I'm not convinced a good light pair of racing flats aren't virtually identical to spikes in a mile race (or longer).

Well, Bruce Tulloh broke 4 and he usually ran barefooted, although I can't say at the moment whether that race was sans shoes.

Tulloh's only sub-4 run was on grass (behind P.Snell's WR in Wanganui, NZ), so there is a good chance he was barefoot...

The Tulloh mystery is resolved with the pic on this page (4th one down):

Tulloh is wearing spikes as he runs in 3rd place...

Not surprising Tulloh ran in spikes on grass. Just too slippery.

Bill Bowerman hand made most shoes for his athletes. Pretty sure he had some guys under 4 wearing his flats or waffles.
