apology to DoubeRBar -- I mistakenly did not address you in my post a few minutes ago about Lewis Jones and Sierra HS. Please continue the discussion. I have about forty years of pent up recollections, stories about CIF SS track of the late 1950s and 1960s and, later, UC Berkeley track and cross country of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Read these latest responses to my original post re: Dennis Carr. I hope someone will be able to report an update on Dennis.

I think he was a great talent who never reached his potential...like most of us! At USC he did some good racing in the 800m, but I wish he would have concentrated on the 1500m/mile and kept competing for a few years. He never ran a sub 4 mile, but had the talent IMHO to run in the low 3:50's.

I agree regarding T&F in So Cal in the '60s. Magical times.

I think everybody looks back on their HS days as magical times (relatively speaking). Tis the nature of the beast.

Garry, et al, - except SoCal has some measure of an edge on other regions/areas: consider the following

100: Forrest Beatty - 9.4*, John James, 9.4^, John House 9.2w and even two others in the same league - Ralph Turner and another I can, Richard Stebbins 9.4w, Harold Busby 9.4w, Willie White 9.5,

200: Forrest Beatty, 20.2, John House 20.4w, ? Underwood 20.5, ? Logue 20.6, Hubie Watson, 20.7, Richard Stebbins 20.x, Harold Busby 20.5, Ralph Wise 20.6

400: Ulis Williams 46.1*

880: Dennis Carr, 1:49.2n, Richard Joyce 1:48.8*

Mile: Tim Danielson, 3:59, Dennis Carr, 4:087*, Carl Trentadue, 4:08.5, Mike Solomon, 4:09, Armando Valencia. 4:07, Story: 4:11, T Smith, 4:12, Bess, 4:13

120 HH: Earl McCullough 13.7*, Bruce Gridley 13.7, Roger Moody 13.8, Steve Caminiti 13.7*

180 LH: Earl 18.1*, Steve Caminiti 18.1*, Tom Hester 18.3, Manny Murrell, 18.2w,

HJ: Ref Brown 7'3"

LJ: Jerry Proctor 26' , Bonds 25'3", Willie Crawford 25' 1 1/2"

PV: Paul Wilson 16' 6 3/4*, Bob Steinhoff 16' 1" (same school), Paul Heglar 16' 3 "

SP: Carl Hubbell 67' 9 3/4", Dave Murphy 67' 2"

plus many others at or very near to the above . Add the 4x100 or 4x200 and ...

please excuse 'punctuation' as I am too lazy to format uniformly\\I think part of the appeal was the quality of the performances as well as the sheer number in some events, that were impressive. The CIF finals almost never disappointed

Most of those marks were through '67.

Rey Brown's 7-3 was at the Oly Trials in mid-September '68.

GH-- maybe true, but not every high school kid--then or now-- could go to a "local" track meet and watch and collect autographs from Jim Ryun and Ron Clarke. Or go to a summer all-commers meet and watch Bob Seagren run an 880.

my point is that viewed from the point of living through it at the time, if you were in Nome and somebody ran 10.4 for 100y (first Alaskan ever to break 10.5!) in 1965, your memories of the era would be just as warm and fuzzy as somebody from SoCal in the same year.

Viewed from a statistical point of view decades later, nothing can touch SoCal, of course, but that wasn't my point.

Yeah, CIF-SS had a ton of great athletes back in the '60's and I competed against a lot of them including several future Olympians. But the only one who really left me in awe was Bobby Bonds... he was a freaking 18 year old superman.

Bobby's sister made the U.S. Olympic team in 1964. She was 8th in the 80 meter hurdles. I believe Bobby, if he had concentrated on track and field, could have been a world class long jumper. He was close to it in high school. He and Cordner Nelson went to the same high school.

Found Dennis Carr on Facebook.

Not much info . . . says he retired in '09 and enjoys poker, bowling, and fishing. A photo shows him in USC singlet with a baton.
I sent him a message informing him of this message board and asked if he would post.
