Unanswered Trivia Questions

Postby 6 5.5hjsteve » Wed Nov 12, 2003 1:32 pm

Who was R.E. Merritt ?

Previous hint: teammate of Ted Nelson at a Texas school
New Hint: Had his picture in T&FN along with Ted Nelson and other teammates

What jersey did John Gutknecht wear when he won the AAU 6 mile in 1961 ?

Hint: this information is available in a certain monthly magazine that most of us read

When Duke won the ACC One Mile Relay in 1960 who were the team members ? One of them set an AR several years later.

Question has been 1/4 answered with Cary Weisiger who set an AR in the 1500 a few years later.

Hint: None. The other 3 were just good college runners although one of them did win the ACC 880 that year I think. (Weisiger won the mile) Names were not listed in T&FN under meet results, just the team and time. Only reason this question was posted at all was to give one member of that quartet a possible brief bit of fame...and it is not me

There are others with unconfirmed answers or unanswered questions-Per and his stretching question for example. I guessed Deak.

It was Gordon Pirie who asked the question, Have you ever seen a racehorse stretch?

It was Bob Richards that Ben Hogan used as an example in his book "The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" Track personalities were obviously more known to the public in Hogan's day.

Dan O'Brien used a jav with a 90meter rating in his best javelin throw in Atlanta in '96.

Here's my unanswered trivia question:

Which 2000 Olympic champion finished 2nd in a competition in 1987 in which a world record was set? What was the event? (hint: it was a very different event from the one in which the athlete won Olympic gold)

No, it's not Zvereva. With Privalova, you're on the right track... just not quite there yet... that's all I'm going to say for now :-)

And yes, it is definitely T&F.

Meanwhile, I have another one: when did it happen that a WR in one Olympic event was broken twice in one day, in two different countries ? What was the event and who were the record setters ?

Nice guess, but... no. They were on consecutive days, and I believe Eberstadt and Rehlingen were both in West Germany. Plus Mogenburg only equalled the record, while I specifically used the word 'break'.

I told you I thought I was only luke war...

same deal in the 1500 when Jungwirth broke a one-day old record, I know that was a day later.

I could research the answer but that's no fun... eager to find out what's correct.

Ewa Grziecka held women's jav wr for about 35 minutes on 6/11/72. They probably hadn't even popped the champagne, when news came that Ruth Fuchs added almost 8 ft to it..

Yup, that's the one :-)
Gryziecka set her record in Bucharest and Fuchs in Potsdam. The interesting thing is the old record had lasted for 8 years (a very long time by the standards of the day).

I'm still waiting for an answer to my other question (2000 Olympic champion finishing second to a WR in 1987).

That wouldn't be a likely candidate, would it ? I said the WR was in a very different event to the one in which the athlete won the Olympics. What other event could a walker compete in at a high level ? Walking races over different distances wouldn't qualify as VERY different in my books.

I'm convinced that the '87 "competition" (that word was chosen carefully I suspect) had nothing to do with track & field.

None of the answers so far is right... but I guess, since her name has come up, I have to admit it is Irina Privalova. The question now is: what was the event in which she finished runner-up to WR in 1987 ? If you don't know it, the answer will surprise you...

My guess:

2.09m Stefka Kostadinova BUL 25-Mar-1965 Roma, ITA 30-Aug-1987

2nd choice:

12.25 +1.4 Zinga Zagorcheva BUL 12-Apr-1956 Drama, GRE 08-Aug-1987

Let me stretch this one a bit farther: the 2nd- and 3rd-place finishers in that competition both won golds at the '93 Worlds; one of them in this event, the other in a different event (that's also different than the '00 event!)

DJ was closest on the 2000 Olympic Champion 2nd in a WR - it was Privalova (under her maiden name Sergeyeva) jumping 13.39 in Moskva on 3Jan87, behind Galina Chistyakova's 13.98

On 6 5.5 Steve's trivia - Gutknecht wore his grad school shirt when he won the '61 AAU 6 miles (I have no idea where that was)
R.E.Merritt was a teammate of Nelson's at Andrews HS in 1960 - R.E.M (did he become famous for beinga rock group ?) ran 48.3y that season
One of the Duke 4x440 team was a fellow called Bazemore - the other 2 ???

2 trivia questions for all of you -
1/ What links HJ WR stters Ludmila Andonova (BUL) and Tamara Bykova (SOV) other than the fact that both set WRs in 1984 ?
2/ Can you name me 2 British Olympic sprint medallists who were well-regarded internationals in another sport (and what sport was it) ?

"1/ What links HJ WR stters Ludmila Andonova (BUL) and Tamara Bykova (SOV) other than the fact that both set WRs in 1984 ?"

Um.........they were both teammates at one point.

Their nations both boycotted the '85 Olympics........

....i'm probably not even remotely close.

>Sergeyeva) jumping 13.39 in Moskva on 3Jan87,

Which makes it a rather deceptive question, since it was indoors and it was before the IAAF even recognized the event.

How about: they both lost their WRs to Stefka Kostadinova (Andonova outdoors, Bykova indoors) ?

That's probably not what you meant, either... How about re-phrasing that question so that it can have only one right answer ?

I never said it was an easy question :-P But it wasn't quite as tricky as The Riddler suggested it could be, either.

You are correct that he wore a jersey for the school where he was in grad school.
R.E.Merritt was a teammate

Correct !! they set a HS record in the mile realy. Very good answer.
One of the Duke 4x440 team was a
>fellow called Bazemore - the other 2 ???

Very good answer on(Tom) Bazemore, he's the one that won the 880 as well. The other 2 still need to be identified.

MAJOR HINT!!!!!! One of the other 2 is my older brother. But since no one knows my name that does not help much , does it. ??!!

On the British sprinter question, if the movie "Chariots of Fire" is correct I will guess that one of them is Eric Liddell.

And I vaguely remember Robbie Brightwell as having been a rugby player before turning to track. Relay medalist maybe? I'm sure he didn't have an individual medal.

Please don't let the answer be some cricket player.
