Almost impossible to leave off Dennis Mitchell. He ran on the fastest four times in histoty.

No, not impossible. He had Mike Marsh a 19.73 200 man, Leroy Burrell a 9.85 man and the greatest anchor ever Carl Lewis a 9.86 , but we all know he wouldn't be caught on anchor. Plus the other 3 worked together everyday at the Santa Monica Track Club. So handoffs weren't as much of an issue as they are now.

I'll take Mitchell over MJ any day of the week for my third leg. And I think I saw virtually every significant race (relay or otherwise) either of them ever ran. On the other hand, that's sort of asking whether or not you want your Ferrari in red or platinum; you can't lose either way.

If anything Mitchell would lead-off (IMO). No way is Mitchell superior to Johnson especially with a running start.

JLightnin' that is so true. Mitchell was a good starter ,but I don't see how people could think Mitchell was better on the curve. You take their times on a 200. The first 100 MJ was definitely faster. MJ usually lead off the turn. So what makes people believe that Mitchell can beat Johnson , when Mitchell was a better starter than MJ? I know people are going to say MJ never ran that fast again, but he also didn't run the 4x100 at his peak either. So I think you would see a turn close to Atlanta's 10.12 ,but with a running start: That's a definite advantage to MJ!

It is from the Watergate tapes. It is almost certainly Nixon and Haldeman. I'll verify it when I get home from work.

first leg: Michael Johnson (best curve runner from a standing start ever)

second leg: Bob Hayes (way to fast, especially with a running start, not to be on the team)

third leg: Dennis Mitchell (the third leg seems to be where most of the problems happen in the relay. Dennis Mitchell was so consistent in his performance while still being super fast on this leg)

fourth leg: Carl Lewis (best overall fourth leg ever. One of the best rise-to-the-occasion athletes ever; possibly had the fastest running start 100m ever)

Tell me someone who you think would win a relay race between these two teams. There are matched up according to their peaks as sprinters. Team 1 would be the 1992 olympic team of Michael Marsh to Leroy Burrell to Dennis Mitchell to Carl Lewis. Team 2 would be Jon Druumond (1996 to 1999)to Maurice Greene(1999 to 2001) to Michael Johnson (1995-1996) to Tim Montgomery(2001-2002). Who would win and why?

Why do folks continue to deny logic. The 99 WC team ran Tim Mongomery third because of his experience passing to Brian Lewis at Norfolk ST. Coach G. Williams remembered and they won easly unlike 97.

You mean Tim Montgo ran 2nd leg, and passed to Brian Lewis on third?

Team B would win by a step. Marsh would probably be a half step behind Drummnd, because of Drummonds start, Burrell from a flying start would be at least equal to if not slightly stronger than Greene, Mitchell would lose 4 meters to Johnson and
Lewis would make up 4 meters on Montgomery but fall a meter short.
