Largest percentage change of a new WR

Has there ever been a larger percentage change in a world record greater than when Bob Beamon leaped 29' 2"?

6.6% isn't too shabby... But he's got nothing on Mildred Carl, who in 1915 improved the women's PV best from 1.855 to 2.136 - a 15.1% improvement :-D

Got to be some women's distance event that is even better. This one is 7.8%.

Adrienne Beames Australia 31 Aug 1971 Weribee AUS 2:46:30
Sara Berman United States 30 May 1971 Brocton USA 3:00:35

And this one is 10.45%

Dale Grieg Britain 23 May 1964 Ryde GBR 3:17:45
Merry Lepper United States 16 Dec 1963 Culver City USA 3:40:22
Violet Percy Great Britain 03 Oct 1926 Stamford Br. GBR 3:40:22

yeah, maybe many WRs greater than Beamon's (percentagewise) - but none in 'established' events. Like Cy Young's 511 wins, one record (6.58% improvement) that won't ever be broken. (at least let's hope not ..enough WRs under suspicion...)

Shouldn't really delve too much into baseball here. But if we do, what about Satchel Paige?
I think he is said to have had about 50 no-hitters, as against about 8 for the "best on record". I do not know how many wins Paige had, but gather it is said to be well over 1000.

Yes, enough with the baseball. For just a split second there I was hoping he was leading into something about Cyrus Young the Javelin Gold medal winner in Helsinki but noooo.
How about Ron Clarke's unreal 27.35 back in '65?
It's too late in the night for me to do the math.

Clarke's 27:39 was just 2.02% improvement. Good illustration of 'apples&oranges' comparisons between events. I researched, and there were some early-1900s throwing records exceding Beamon's %, but... even then, probably few noticed or cared.

In the progression of world records book I came across an improvement in the world best in women's TJ of around 25% :-o It was in 1915, I believe. But I do agree such comparisons mean very little.
