Sprinter Identification:Does anyone remember the name of the U.S. Sprinter who finished 2nd in the 1960 Olympics in Rome? I know Armin Hary won the gold in that race mainly because of his start, but the U.S. sprinter who finished 2nd came on strong at the end.
(Side note of interest, he may have been the last caucasian sprinter to qualify for the US in the 100 meter dash).
Re: Sprinter Identification:would love to know what Sime's last 50m split was - he sure came on strong. He WAS last caucasian US 100 Olympian. Jerry Ashworth made '64 relay team, but Sime last 100 guy, I think. No 'American Borzovs(or Wellses)' on the horizon....
Re: Sprinter Identification:What about the kid from Kentucky, (Compost ot Combest is his last name) I don't know if he graduated from H.S. yet or not, but he has a lot of potenial, and he's rather small now (Like 5"7", 140 lbs.). If he continues to grow physically watch out! The last I heard he is running in the 10.3 range for 100 meters.
Re: Sprinter Identification:Hey, where'd ya' find that time warp?
Re: Sprinter Identification:No Compost hasn't graduated from high school yet, but give him time, he's only 23!
Re: Sprinter Identification:I think you're exaggerating. He won't turn 23 until Monday.
Re: Sprinter Identification:Casey Combest (US HS record holder in the 60 ?) seems to have given up the sport, the last article I read.
Re: Sprinter Identification:i actually raced against casy in a track meet in 2000. he is wild and out of control. unless he has changed his lifestyle we want ever know what he can do.
Sprinter Identification:Neither Sime nor Hary was last Caucasian 100 M. We've had Borzov since (who doubled).
I might add- Pietro Mennea held the 200 record forever. Bijan C. Bayne
Re: Sprinter Identification:Bijan, take a closer look at the initial question on this thread, it was who was the last U.S. caucasian Olympic sprinter in the 100, it was not last caucasian winner in the Olympics.
Nice to see some new blood on this historical side. Keep it up.
Re: Sprinter Identification:if you ran me then i beat you. how would you know i was a wild one. if you beat me then i'd say you could say i was wild one. i'll run again it just takes time. casey combest
Re: Sprinter Identification:Hope you make it back on the track so you can take advantage of your GOD-given talent.
Best of Luck Mr, Combest.
Re: Sprinter Identification:JLightnin' wrote that Dave Sime (2nd in 1960 Olympic 100m) "may have been the last caucasian sprinter to qualify for the US in the 100 meter dash)."
------ Interestingly, just four years earlier in the 1956 Olympics at Melbourne, USA caucasians Bobby Morrow and Thane Baker captured four of the six OG sprint medals. They ran 1-2 in the 100m (and 1-3 in the 200m where Morrow won in OG record time). Earlier in 1956 Jim Lea of USA set the 440-yard world record, suggesting a third caucasian dash winner at Melbourne - in the 400m. But that did not come to pass because Lea, then in the U.S. military, was subsequently injured.
Re: Sprinter Identification:How about Glenn Davis and Dave Mills I believe they both sprinted for Ohio State in the late 50's and early 60's.
Re: Sprinter Identification:don't TELL me we are going to turn this into a Memory Lane of White Track Stars From the Fifties.
But if we must, add Eddie Southern.
Re: Sprinter Identification:Its been suggested elsewhere that Dave Sime might have beaten Bobby Morrow in '56 if he had not been injured. How credible is this?
Was he already past his best when he ran in the '60 Olympics?
