Exciting past WC race--Tainted or not, this must have been an exciting finals to watch in 87.
Results - 800 METRES - Women - Final Monday, August 31, 1987 Pos Lane Athlete Country Mark 1 Wodars-Grau Sigrun GDR 1:55.26 (NR) 2 Wachtel Christine GDR 1:55.32 (PB) 3 Gurina Lyubov URS 1:55.56 (PB) 4 Quirot Ana Fidelia CUB 1:55.84 (AR) 5 Kratochvílová Jarmila TCH 1:57.81
Re: Exciting past WC race--Yes it was. The WC in 1987 were a lot of fun and had some great races, including the women's 800. My favorite in Rome was the men's 400 hurdles. The current WR in the women's high jump was set at this meet. I also liked the stadium in Rome. A lot of good memories from that meet.
Re: Exciting past WC race--There was another good one, 11 years before that race at the '76 OG.....
1. Tatyana KAZANKINA (RUS) 1:54:94 WR 2. Nikolina SHTEREVA (BUL) 1:55.42 3. Elfi ZINN (GDR) 1:55.60 4. Anita WEISS (GDR) 1:55.74 5. Svetlana STYRKINA (BLR) 1:56.44
Re: Exciting past WC race--Funny, that doesn't look like a WC race.
Re: Exciting past WC race-->Funny, that doesn't look like a WC race.
That's why I said it was at the '76 OG
Re: Exciting past WC race--Actually, before the advent of the World Championships, I think you'll find that the IAAF Rulebook cited the Olympic Games as also being the "world championships"
Re: Exciting past WC race--Great now we get to have WC threads going back 100+ years. Who'd a thunk it! What's that make the 2003 edition in Paris? I think they're calling it the 9th WC. Seems kinda strange to call it the 9th if the OGs were previous world championships?
My point was and remains the OG 800 cited was not an exciting past WC race as the thread intimated. How about Edmonton 2001 m200? 1 4 503 Kedéris Konstadínos GRE 20.04 0.163 2 3 616 Williams Christopher JAM 20.20 0.143 3 1 1011 Collins Kim SKN 20.20 (NR) 0.136 3 2 1154 Crawford Shawn USA 20.20 0.161 5 5 425 Malcolm Christian GBR 20.22 0.157 6 7 811 Buckland Stéphane MRI 20.24 0.179 7 6 1183 Little Kevin USA 20.25 0.134 8 8 417 Devonish Marlon GBR 20.38 0.133 It took forever for the photo to be read and everybody just sat there watching the replay over and over. Not sure it was the most exciting race in Edmonton, that'd probably go to the men's 5k, which had 20+ lead changes in 12.5 laps.
Re: Exciting past WC race--The Edmonton race was very close for places 2-7, but there was no doubt about the winner. But take a look at these results:
Mens - 200m Final September 03, 1987 1. Calvin Smith (USA) 20.16 2. Gilles Queneherve (FRA) 20.16 3. John Regis (GBR) 20.18 4. Robson Da Silva (BRA) 20.22 5. Vladimir Krylov (URS) 20.23 6. Floyd Heard (USA) 20.25 It was totally impossible to say who won even from watching the slo-mo - part of the problem being that the top 3 were far apart lane-wise.
Re: Exciting past WC race-->Great now we get to have WC threads going back
100+ years< Nah, the IAAF is only 91 years old. And I don't think that OG=WC language was in there from day one.
Re: Exciting past WC race--somebody posted Kederis' website on the Current Events side of the board. There's a video of the whole race though it doesn't show the blanket finish as well as some footage does.

Re: Exciting past WC race--I remember that one (m100 1991) well. Also had great rounds leading up too it.
Re: Exciting past WC race--I remember the '87 womens 800 painfully. A young Quirot who should have won the race on merit getting some harsh lessons from the East Germans and being carried wide coming into the final straight. I enjoyed the 1989 World Cup when she finally got her revenge.
Re: Exciting past WC race--Sat at a table next to Quirot's at dinner in Zürich last week, and you'll be glad to know that her (ongoing?) plastic surgery(ies) have been very successful. Major parts of her face are back to normal.
Re: Exciting past WC race--How about the WC'87 mens 400H finish. I saw it live in the stadium and it looked even closer than it was. The crowd went bananas.
1. Edwin Moses (US) ................. 47.46 2. Danny Harris (US) ................ 47.48 3. Harald Schmid (WG) ............... 47.48

The only problem is that it was a rabbited race. Kudos to those who can name the rabbit!
Re: Exciting past WC race--Must have bin Mitchell who beat the gun ....

Re: Exciting past WC race--Here's another great WCh race from 97 - Men's 400m:
1. Michael Johnson (USA) 44.12 2. Davis Kamoga (UGA) 44.37 3. Tyree Washington (USA) 44.39 4. Mark Richardson (GBR) 44.47 5. Jerome Young (USA) 44.51 6. Iwan Thomas (GBR) 44.52 7. Antonio Pettigrew (USA) 44.57 MJ out front (yet again), then just 0.2 separating the next 6 athletes. Jerome Young ran an almost identical time to win this year's WCh, but finished 'only' 5th in 97.
Re: Exciting past WC race--One of the best ever TJ comps (in terms of depth) at the '93 WCh... 10 men over 17m!
1. Mike Conley (USA) 17.86 2. Leonid Voloshin (RUS) 17.65 3. Jonathan Edwards (GBR) 17.44 4. Ralf Jaros (GER) 17.34 5. Pierre Camara (FRA) 17.28 6. Denis Kapustin (RUS) 17.19 7. Easily the best long jump competition ever. Lewis had three jumps of 29 feet or greater, included a wind-aided jump that broke Beamon's old record and a legal 29-1.5 (Lewis' third great jump at the meet was a legal 29 feet flat). However, we all know who actually won: Powell, with his world record jump. Great, great competition.
Re: Exciting past WC race--Didn't Dave Johnson post the same race on this thread on Sept. 12? C'mon--if you're going to play the game, you gotta pay attention.
Re: Exciting past WC race-->Didn't Dave Johnson post the same race on this
>thread on Sept. 12? C'mon--if you're going to >play the game, you gotta pay attention. You're not paying attention yourself (and neither was Dave) - this race was first posted by az on Aug. 12
Re: Exciting past WC race--You're right, dammit. So now we've got three votes for that race. Would the next guy who does this please just refer to the race--we all know the results by now.
Thank you.
Re: Exciting past WC race--I wasn't voting for the '91 M 100, nor would I. I was asking the question "who rabbited the race" and giving the results for as an aid.
Re: Exciting past WC race--If you are suggesting that Dennis Mitchell "rabbitted" that '91 World Championsip race you are wrong. He might have reacted before everyone else but the actual race leader for the first 90 meters before being collared by Leroy Burrell and Carl Lewis was Ray Stewart. He looked likely to pull off an upset until shortening dramatically in the last 10 meters.
Easily the most competitive 100 metres race that I have seen. Top 6 within 1/10 th of a second.
