Not so different from some other events. I agree with Buss and Krymarenko but not Kemp. Even Thomas in 2007 was not an outrageous surprise. He had another 2,35 that year and beat the elite on another occasion. He was top ranked that year

But these guys were WC winners. You don't find similar upsets in recent Olympics.

Impossible to pick a winner. Silnov maybe. I like the Drouin pick for 5th! He impressed in the rain a few weeks ago beating Grabarz.

Poor Drag. Out at 2.16m. Although, at his age it is a victory in that he has made an appearance at the Olympics.

Klyugin (he wasn't the top Russian on form, that was Voronin)? Hammad winning a medal? (Yes I know about the rain falling in Sydney.) Wessig in Moscow? They weren't shocks?!

Yelesina (I know it was the women's event, but she has OG gold and Bergqvist, Cloete and Vlasic don't) also in Sydney? Ritter back in '88?

Has anyone seen or read an interview with any of the high jumpers? Only 6 over 2.29 is pathetic, there has to be a reason for it.

Dmitik or Shustov? Very similar records. They are both a step down from Silnov and Ukhov.

Noticed Grabartz started jumping at 2.21 as opposed to 2.16 for most of the others. Well, at least it shows he's confident.

Kynard's stock probably went up.

Glad to see Mike Mason in the final. Went back to his old coach. Better conditioned, new run-up and better technically over the bar.

Kynard could be a sleeper in this event and the other guy flying under the radar is Drouin. Did anyone else see Donald Thomas at the early heights? I would bargain to say that his technique is worse now than it has ever been. I know this guy was the cinderella story a few years ago and many folks felt like to make any adjustments to his technique would be sinful, but c'mon! You can't let someone go to the olympics with technique resembling...heck I don't know what it resembles. Leaving his technique alone has done very little with regards to hardware for him since his WC.

I was there last night and it was not kind weather for any jumping event. Where I am in London right now it's cold, windy and drizzling. The weather will be a factor tonight, for some more than others (and as there were some cross winds, which side you jump from could be a factor). The home support for Brits had to be seen and heard to be believed and if Grabarz can feed off it, it will be a significant advantage. Grabarz for Gold!

How could they came up with 2.25-2.29-2.33???!!! That ruined the final! We are not in 1993.

Wow. A death march at 2.33, a good half-dozen jumpers were clear over but scraped it with their heels or calves. Tough on Grabarz to be the home favorite.

Kynard vs. Ukhov for the gold. And now Ukhov over!

I don't understand it either. Why such a steep progression when that progression is never being used in a normal meet?

Ukhov clears 2.36 in his first attempt, that should wrap up the gold.

Ukhov over at 2.38! Surely that is it.

Loving the BBC dry commentary: "Kynard grabs the bar, as if to have a conversation with it; 'Stay up there, you!'"

Lesson to learn: always listen to a former WR holder/Olympic champion.

I know Kynard is coming back for his senior year at K-State, and I think bronze medalist Drouin is coming back to Indiana as well. Should be some awesome competition!

Haha. Only in my dreams, man. Dietmar is just my favorite jumper of all time. But you are right. I can't wait for Erik's senior season. This experience will be invaluable for him. So happy for Ukhov to put it together when it counts and FINALLY live down the indoor jumper status! :)

In the pool I'm in I had a Russian winning and an American coming second, just picked the wrong athletes! Had Grabarz in bronze but not sharing it with two others!

Great for Ukhov - he's the best talent of this generation and a fantastic character!
