Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Chemos didn't look to good.
Since its 4 +3, I think Galkina should get through as that seemed to be a fast heat.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–9:24.91 Great time for an 8 sec PB, can she go faster in the final?
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Emma through easily
Assefa 9:25.42 Ghribi 9:27.42 Coburn 9:27.51 Dominguez 9:29.71 Cruz 9:30.06 Puts Parker GBR on the bubble.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–This is shaping up to be completely different than what anyone could reasonably expect.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Every race seemed to be around 7:01 with 2 laps to go.
Franks in it but 7 still in contact. I believe Franks made it 9:30.??

Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Four Americans to the final in Mens and Womens....anyone have any idea when that last happened?
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.In which context? The w-steeple has only been an Olympic event since 2008.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.
Well, in that case, we've got a first since Fam was the only male in 2008, with Barringer and Willard competing on the women's side.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.So glad for Clarisse Cruz (age 34) , after fall she made the the final with PB.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Slept through the entire morning's program!!
(This 8 hour difference is a real sleep-depriver for us Washington-staters!!! But the results were fun to see!! Sorry about Shalaya not making it, though she ran a decent time. Ditto with Australian Genevieve LaCaze, who DID get a PR out of it!! Both are young, and should be on their Rio teams!! As to the final, it's Pick a Number Out of a Hat!! I'll go with Galkina, as she has the WR!! (Will either Franek or Coburn challenge the AR??)
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.You are probably the only one, Galkina only made the final as one of the 3 with the fastest times. A Galkina in form would have easily qualified.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Glad to see Galkina make the final -- not expecting medal performance or anything like that, but as WR holder and defending OG champion, I was glad to see her advance. Would have liked to see Inzikuru (UGA) advance to the final, for similar "historical" reasons -- she has first global championship (2005 WC) gold in this event, and first Commonwealth gold (2006), too. She hasn't been anywhere near her best form since 2006, but I was glad to see her come back to some extent this year, and hoped she would advance. Also wanted to see Barbara Parker advance -- close, but that's all.
I expect the medals to be distributed among the African athletes, with Chemos at the top. I hope the USA athletes can each earn PBs in the final. That would a strong result for each.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Ridiculous that Zhudina ran near her SB (as Slobodenyuk did in the men's race, though his SB was a PB), but Shmidt was half a minute behind hers!
Emma Coburn is HOT! EMMAKINS! Shame for Barbara, hope for a good final.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.
Master Po, are you British? I know you have a big interest in/knowledge of Chinese athletics.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Come on Zarapova....
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.HA!!! I saw this coming!!! No contest.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Zarapova became the first women's steeple world champion to win Olympic gold.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Emma Coburn got a slight PR....by about 1.5 seconds.
But not much chance when you have a crowd going sub-9:10!!
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72My sister-in-law is from Tunisia, so I'm always happy when they have someone doing good. Extra bonus when it is a chick.
I think that Coburn acquitted herself well. The 9:10 range is not in her wheelhouse yet, but I think that she can get there. Franek also did well to make the final. She pretty much ran her finals race to make the final. She should still be proud.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.
andyjgt No, not British -- just rooting for the home team. (My ancestors ruined my chance at being a Brit about 3 centuries ago when they bailed in favor of other shores. My loss. I do have a great interest in Chinese athletics, but as for the knowledge, not as much as I'd like, by a lot. Language skills not quite good enough to do, e.g., what Brett Larner does w Japan Running News (a blog I always like to promote). Back to the wSteeple: I thought Ghribi gave a rather flagrant push to one of the Ethiopians in the last lap, but seeing as no one on here has commented on it, it must have not as big a deal as it looked to me -- just business as usual in the context of this event -- after all, no one got knocked down. Happy to see Coburn earn a PB in the final. Can't be easy to do in one's first championship steeple final. USA has some good young ones in this event. I hope they can keep it going.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72Zaripova's hurdling is to die for.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72Who would have thought Ethiopians would do better than Kenyans in steeple?
After all the bravado about sweeping the distance events, the Kenyan team is facing a near disaster on the women's side.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.Not her first, Coburn was 12th in Daegu.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72
Agree -- she's great to watch. Because I was so convinced the Kenyans and Ethiopians were going to win these medals, I hadn't thought much about her prior to the race (yeah, I know she's the WC and at the top of the formchart, but sometimes I just don't pay attention). But I so much enjoyed the way she took control of the pace and enjoyed watching her great hurdling technique, so I wanted her to win. I must not have been very clued-in for this event at Daegu & Berlin WC's because I felt like I had never really noticed the way she hurdles. She has a rather nice championship streak going: silver at Berlin, gold at Euros, gold at Daegu, gold today. I'm sure she would love to continue this at next year's WC!
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Ayalew (Eth) leads Q to final at 9:24.
Thanks for the correction, ed. I noted in another post here that I must not have been paying very close attention to the Daegu steeple, so my mistake. (But can I blame NBC?
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72
And the race tactics, emphasis on race. Nice accelerations and keep on running and hurdling...
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72
Yes. (Assuming I can do arithmetic) these were her splits: 3:06.24 3:05.36 2:55.72 Never let anyone else take control of the race.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72
The Kenyan men did not exactly sweep the 10,000, and did not get Silver in the Steeple, so their hoped-for sweep there was also lacking.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72
After her win in Daegu, I was always pretty confident she was going to win the Olympics (I had her as one of my locks on the current events thread). Historically, it seems athletes with good technique in the women's 'chase generally take the title. Chemos has a great record on the Diamond League circuit but she's not used to someone dictating the pace. Normally the pace starts to wane when she pacemakers drop out in commercial races but you just know Zaripova is going to keep her foot on the accelerator.
Re: 2012 OG: wSteeple–Yuliya Zaripova (Rus) 9:06.72Can we get the coach who teaches Zaripova some tactics, help our british 800 and 1500 m runners, particularly the men
