Which athlete do you think has the best chance of winning a gold medal in the WC in Paris next month? You may select only one athlete. Please do not list more than one athlete. Be sure to include the event with the athlete's name. I will not name anyone here because I don't think anyone has a lock on a gold medal in Paris. Remember, you pick the person you think has the best chance of winning in Paris. In about a month we'll see who got the most votes.

Excellent choices so far. Great job. Remember, only one name per person. We'll see what happens.

I want to agree although I'm having a hard time believing that anyone will beat El G at 1500m

you be against Riedel? you know his history at Worlds right? 5x World Champion. He's about the only guy I'd actually pick against the field in a bet (if I had good odds)

what you don't think her seasonal best of 51.66 is going to get Freeman a gold? I think she's sandbagging, ready to bust out a 48high.

For the record (not that I think her chances were worth discussing anyway), Freeman announced she wouldn't be competing in Paris due to her poor form, at least not in the individual event.

In her absence, I guess the surest bet must be Trevor Misapeka in the 100 meters :-P

actually there are two people that are just untouchable in their events, Felix Sanchez and Anna Guervera, so they are most likely gonna win. I heard she is gonna move up to the 800 and challenge the WR. I forget where i heard that.

We have some great names so far. Remember, you can only select one athlete. Hockeyplayer did not select one athlete, so we aren't counting his selections. If he wants to select one, he may. Right now the leader is Felix Sanchez with five votes over Ana Guevara with four votes. Voting will end in August one week before the competition begins in Paris.

Felix Sanchez is a lock

Sanchez isn't a lock for one simple reason: like Alan Johnson he's in an event fraught with danger, where the slightest miscalculation can turn into disaster. You can overcome mistakes in other running events, but not ones where hurdles are in the way.

I gotta say Mutola.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Koji Murofushi in the hammer. He's undefeated this year and is more than two meters ahead of the next guy on the yearly list.

Hey, "realist"

The 400h is usually a better bet to go to form than the 100h's or 110h's, IMO. I'll stick with Sanchez, though Hersh makes a good case for the hammer guy.

With about 27 days before our voting ends, I believe the scoring goes like this:

Felix Sanchez 6
Ana Guevara 5
Maria Mutola 4
Robert Fazekas 2
Christian Olsson 1
Allen Johnson 1
Koji Murofushi 1
Carolina Kluff 1
Gail Devers 1
Roman Sebrle 1
Lars Riedel 1

The question remains: Do you think has the best chance for a gold medal in Paris next month at the World Championships? Please, only one name per guess. Also, give the event.

I'm kinda amazed that people would pick Lars Riedel or Carolina Kluft as their lock (especially Riedel against Fazekas-Alekna).
I actually think Sanchez-Guevara are biggest locks (would go with Guevara because of the potential hurdle problem facing Sanchez). But, because he has no votes so far, because he's a 3-time champ, and because it ain't the Olympics, my vote goes to Hicham El Guerrouj in the 1500, just to put him in the picture. He belongs.
Jim Rorick
Also like Hersh's Murofushi pick.
