Reminder Message Board Guidelines and Violators

Postby bhall » Tue Jul 01, 2003 9:19 am

In the past few weeks there have been more posts in direct violation to the message board guidelines (http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/tfn/di ... elines.jsp).

First, let me remind all newbies to read the guidelines before posting. Second, we take the guidelines seriously. If you're going to post on drugs and make unfounded accusations/suggestions that some athlete or group of athletes is using drugs then the post will be pulled and you run the possibility of being bounced from the board. Finally, if you're going to troll or consistently be a jerk on the board I'm going to bounce you.

All that being said, I have just bounced Food!, Esoteric, Football man (all the same user).

So far things on the board have been great if not awesome. The level of chat and variety of opinions and interests has been excellent.

Allow me to echo Ben's sentiments about the quality of stuff on the Board. I've been really pleased with the general quality of posts; really feel like those who are participating are adding something good to the sport.

Let me also say that while I actually found the silly food postings to be rather amusing, the offender obviously went way over the top when he/she chose to assume multiple identities and litter the Board with stupidity. That's what caused the banning.

ps--my vote for most informative post of late has been the one on speed vs. strength in the 800. I'm learning from it, and knowledge is the best thing there is. Thanks again!

What's wrong is that it's the T&FN message board and our rules clearly state no unsubstantiated bullshit about drugs. People who who can't handle that should simply stay away.

You asked, "It's a message board, who really gonna believe it?" Pardon us for putting on airs, but we're trying NOT to be just any old message board. There's no shortage of sites where you can post whatever you want. We've got pride in what we do, and we want people to feel confident that they can come here and get the straight dope (no pun intended).

We resisted starting a board for years simply because were were so appalled at what was passing for journalism on other sites and we didn't want to get sucked down to their level. We like to think that we've now got enough checks and balances in place that we can bring you the kind of board we think the track & field world really deserves. And we'll do whatever we have to to keep it that way.

Thanks.

I would like to know what the board's view of aliases is. Usually I post as 'tafnut', but occasionally I assume a name that fits the discussion. Is that cool or should we stick to one moniker?

Agree, no need thrashing someone unjustly. This other board I go to is for powerlifting. The APF & WPO are powerlifting groups started because the members refuse to be drug tested thus their lifts are much higher than say USAPL that test every meet. So the people on this board get very angry about someone calling the APF a bunch of druggers when they stated that is why they started their group. I believe in innocent until proven otherwise but you clearly state in published interviews that you use and will continue to use even though it is a felony, well then be prepared for fallout. later.

Memo to self: what the heck is our policy?

Seriously, although the increasing bad traffic might suggest that we'll eventually have to go to full registration, for now we prefer the "anarchy" of leaving things relatively open in this area. Although as you will note from earlier today we finally popped a cap on food/football/whatever for making multiple inane posts while being the same person. It's one thing to assume differnt persona, it's another to start agreeing with yourself on controversial topics.

Having said that, I have to admit that one of my great pleasures in reading the board is seeing the creativity in terms of who is making the post when obviously not (viz: Perry Mason weighing in on a legal issue).

It's an honor system, but I'd be quite happy if Pat Crandall/tafnut, when posting as [example] Shannon Doherty, put that name in the posting line, but at end of message tacked on "Pat Crandall, aka tracknut" or even just "tracknut"

Make sense? (and I hope I'm not opening the doors to complete anarchy here: i/we ignored an earlier post from the person who said they wer eposting ast 5-6 different people)

IMHO, if you have something to say, and really believe in it, you'll let everyone know who you are. I'm pretty controversial (and at times obnoxious), but willing to take the heat because I'm not posting to hear (read) myself in public. If you feel the need to hide yourself, please go somewhere else. This MB is run by a professional publication (oxymoron??) and the standards to be here should be high. GH is right, if you can't play by the rules, play somewhere else.
