Many NCAA in-season records met

Postby Trackshark » Sun Jun 15, 2003 8:35 am

Amazing that so many records were met -- all on the women's side -- during the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships. These records, of course, are considered 'in-season' which falls before the end of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

1500 meters: 4:06.75, Tiffany McWilliams (Mississippi State)

Steeplechase: 9:44.95, Kassi Andersen (BYU)

400 hurdles: 54.24, Sheena Johnson (UCLA)

4x1 low-alt: 42.55, LSU (Stephanie Durst, Monique Hall, Lolo Jones, Muna Lee)

Hammer throw: 229-00, Candice Scott (Florida)

Javelin throw: 202-10, Irina Kharun (Indiana)

It was definitely a fantastic meet. I've only been to 5 NCAA outdoor meets, and I probaby say everyone is the best I ever saw, but I can't remember the last time I enjoyed any meet, NCAA or not, this much.

Amazing how regionals left everyone so tired and worn out, huh? :-)

Good point on the regional concept...looks like it did not hamper too many times as we all thought.

Also, Sanya Richards of Texas tied the low-alt record in the 400 meters with her time of 50.58 (which is also a new American Junior record). Talk about a fantastic freshman year!

Sanya actually broke the American Collegiate Record of LaTasha Stroman (50.60) set in Indianapolis, IN in 1997. Ironically, she beat Longhorn great, Suziann Reid to give LSU the team title.
