Noticed PAC 12 xc is in Lousville, CO, at 5300 ft. Hard to imagine other teams being competive with Colorado (men) with the race bing at altitude. Recall a few years ago when Big 8 (12) Track champs were in Boulder, CU basically swept the 5k/10k. Arizona (slight altitude) women are ranked #1 in NCAA, and should be able to win?
As much as I'm excited to go watch this weekend, it is a bit nuts to hold conference meets, and also in Feb the USATF XC champs, at altitude. The weather this weekend should be fine, but in Feb snow is a distinct possibility (they had snow on the ground for the USATF XC meet Feb 2007.)
Just remembered, the Mountain West Conference meet is tomorrow on the Eisenhower Golf Course at the Air Force Academy. That's at 6800'. (Barely over a mile away from the golf course is the track where Calvin Smith ran 9.93 for 100m in July 1983, at the U.S. Olympic Festival. The track sits at 6990'.)
I was standing at the 500m to go mark and Cheserek accelerated smoothly and looked really sharp. He put 6 seconds on second place in the last 600m.
CU's men look really good. Scary thing is they return their top seven plus Jake Hurysz, who is injured this fall and would have been right there with their top three if healthy. As it was, their 1 and 5 men were only 28 seconds apart. With Hurysz, probably only 13 seconds.
