5m down to Gatlin? I'd be interested in a piece of that action.

At BEST right now (i.e., Moscow) Bolt is .25 up on Gatlin, which is about 3m. And that's assuming a perfect hand-off by Jam. I'm still calling the Jams the favorites, but there's a real pucker-factor there now.

Don't think Bolt would get back to Gatlin with a 5m deficit....unless he is in sub 9.5 shape.

in the olympics bolt and ryan bailey almost got the button at the same time for the anchor. in the end it was only two tenths separating bolt from bailey. if gatlin has more than two meters bolt will not catch him !

It was hyperbole, boys, hyperbole.

However, if they are "slightly" behind isn't as important as delivering the baton to Bolt. The makeup of the team should be about who are the best relay runners not necessarily the three fastest guys.

BTW, as a track fan, I'd love to see Bolt down by three meters to Gatlin to see how close the gap was at the end.

It depends, where are they getting the handoff?

I take it everyone is leaving out the fact that Gatlin ran past Bolt earlier this year?

With a running start though, it's not much of a contest.

in the context of this discussion, the start is irrelevant, since we're talking about with both at top speed how much of a deficit Bolt could eat up.

I'm sticking with 3m as the over/under.

In my opinion if both are in good shape, Bolt wins with 2m down, but he would lose with 3m disadvantage.
Of course if Bolt is in very good shape and Gatlin in "normal shape" perhaps he could win with 3m disadvantage ...

We will see like they are in Moscow for to talk better

What with all of surrounding machinations of the past 10 days, and the influence of those machinations on the relay, the relay is obviously going to be of huge interest.

I just hope for the integrity of the sport that Bolt comes through untainted by any association to a drug scandal and mows down Gatlin; because as far as I am concerned Gatlin shouldn't have been allowed back into the tent.

Are you forgetting the part where Bolt got one of his best starts ever and Gatlin ran past him this year?

Yes, but I'm not naive enough to think that it's the same Bolt we'll see in Moscow.

Irrelevant, Gatlin is here now, and is running.

Like many have been saying, anything greater than the 2-3 meter range would probably need Bolt close to 9.5 form to run down Gatlin at this point.

Why, he has only one PEDs violation; the other was purely a technicality and was ruled not to be a case of performance enhancing drugs?

That is true. He was suspended in 2001 when he was a freshman at univ of Tennessee for 18 months for adderrall positive test, but allowed by the IAAF to return to competition in August of 2002. He was allowed to compete at the NCAA level where he only completed two seasons. On his profile on the IAAF web site his performances from 2002 are still listed where as if he was banned they wouldn't br on record (like anything he did between April of 2006 and July of 2010)
