The faster competitors (non-USA):
G Burka
V Kibiwot
N Langat
H Obiri
M Jamal

The top Americans competing are....
B Martinez
T Moser
J Simpson
S Rowbury

I believe Phoebe Wright will be the pacer.....or one of them!

I started this thread today because I'm interested in your views on whether....and how much...the USA women's 1500 list will be revised in this one race.
Can Simpson improve on her 3:59.90? She seems to be in the best form of her life....or at least since she ran that sub-4 back in 2009.
Will Rowbury run under 4:00 for the first time?
Can Moser go sub-4? Her kick is fierce......and if she's anywhere near.......!!
Finally, is this Brenda Martinez's best event?
Remember, earlier this year she was thinking she'd try for the Moscow 1500, then changed her mind!!
Can she break the AR??
(Yes, I know it would be a HUGE drop from her PR of 4:04+......but she's in great shape, and has a 1 second faster PR over 800 than she did when she ran her 1500 best.)

I don't know whether Martinez is ready to take the AR, but I was a bit surprised that she didn't go for this event at the World Champs. The fact that she has sub-2:00 speed proves that she should be able to compete with the best.

This should be a great race. The USA is proving that we have pretty good depth for both men AND women in this event. I'd like to see a bunch of the Americans get close to 4:00 here.

I think that they are building up and (deliberately) not yet at their peak. I would be surprised at any sub-4s by Americans. Thinking back to Suzy Favor-Hamilton, I think her pursuit of the top performances before the big show contributed to her failings when it mattered.

I can't imagine that you're going to be anything but disappointed by the results of this race. Something I assume happens for 95% of races for you.

I think the Tibiri/Moser match-up looks interesting. Tibiri is one of the best U-20s around and Moser almost 32. Upcoming youth vs ageing WC competitor.

Not disappointed.
But if the pace is fast......and I'm guessing it will be....on a sub-4 pace for the Africans....then what will the Americans do?
Sit back about 2-3 seconds and hope to outkick them?
Go for fast times....with the Africans?
Or just let the Africans go....and try to "win" the battle of the rest of the field??

But it will all depend on how fast the Africans go.

Big props to the US women - 1,3,4,5 - and this was a top-notch field. Only downer was US Champ Moser's last place finish.

The pacer was WAY off for a sub-4.....63.92, then a 68????
Otherwise, we would've seen a mass finish under 4!!
BUT......a FANTASTIC race for the Americans!!
Wonder if Martinez is wondering if she made the wrong event choice!
And what happened to Moser??
GREAT run for Gabrielle Anderson....and Rowbury!!

P.S. The American women did MUCH better than the American 1500 men!!

Wow, those are significant PBs from Anderson (3+ seconds) and Martinez (nearly 3 seconds). Also impressed with Rowbury's performance -- I had forgotten that she ran 4:00.xx in both 2008 & 2009. This is the fastest since those two. This sort of speed in the 5k should be helpful (not making any predictions here). Of course this is Simpson's 2nd fastest ever as well, also going back to her 2009 PB. Good to see both of these athletes at or near the top of their form.

I think this is the first year with four US women under 4:02, and they all did it in one race.

Wright was 10 meters ahead of the field after the first lap. I thought her slowing down to let the field catch her at 500m and then speeding up again was an excellent piece of pacing.

In 2009, the US had four under 4:01:

3:59.38 Anna Pierce
3:59.90 Jennifer Simpson
3:59.98 Christin Wurth-Thomas
4:00.81 Shannon Rowbury

Agree. She watched the race and realized she wasn't pacing, slowed way down and paced them. She did the right thing.

Interesting last lap for Simpson who let Obiri pass her but sprung into action as soon as Martinez got close and ran down Obiri off the curve.

I took splits at the finish line for the leader of the "racers".
48.8
1:56.3 (67.5)
3:01.4 (65.1) Simpson in lead
4:00.5 (59.1)

The 2nd lap dropped off, and, as others have mentioned, Wright slowed and waited for them. Still, the 800 was 2:12 when they wanted 2:06-08.

Teferi got a PB, Jamal and Rodriguez (won Berlin 1500 but DQd for knocked Burka, who was also in this race, off the track) both SBs.

Moser????
PB for Gabriele Anderson, who did such a good job pacing the Paris 5000. I'm sure her most important goal this year has been to earn jacksf's respect! >:-)

Kibiwott -- good speed test for Moscow 5000.

So Simpson's final 800 was 2:04.2?
Not half bad for someone who's never broken 2:00!!
(Of course, she CAN go sub-2!!)

Simpson's times at Drake Relays, Rome, Monaco now rate Nos. 2-3-4 on her all-time list.
