Official statement:- "David Rudisha regrets that he will not be able to defend his 800m title at the world championships in Moscow next month. His knee problem is progressing however unfortunately not fast enough to enable him to prepare in time. He sends his Kenyan teammates all his best wishes for the championships".

As discussed before, he has a ‘bone bruise’ on the underside of his right knee. It’s not ‘serious’ as in requiring surgery or anything; there is no damage to ligaments or tendons .…but of course it’s painful to run and serious enough that he hasn’t been able to run since 29th May. He still feels it’s “still there”.

The decision was announced today however to be honest it has become inevitable over the last couple of weeks. Rudisha had been on crutches for over three weeks to completely unweight the leg and hope the bruise would heal. But since he came off crutches he knew that it was not progressing quickly enough to resume training. We had another MRI done on 4th July, it showed the bruise is healing……..but was still there. He knew that anyway.

He's very disappointed but is accepting of the situation. He knows well of the many athletes who suffer injuries that stop them running championships (of course he also was ruled him out of the chance to run in Beijing in 2008). Rudisha is talking of four big years ahead. He'll be keen for a big year next year and furthermore the opportunity to win back his title in 2015 and of course defend his Olympic title in Rio.

My little window of hope is now shut. :( I wish Rudisha good health and a speedy recovery.

Given his performances, I am not sure I want to see a 90% Rudisha, and certainly not an 80% one; it would not be fair [to him and his legacy].

Really contrasts how different track and field is to other sports. If you're not fully fit you have no chance. But in the team sports you can play on, even carry an injury. Hope he's back to his best soon.
