For the record, these are the splits I took from the Flotrack video for Solomon's 1:13.28:

(According to TFN [Jul. '86, p. 23], Gray passed 400m in 47.1 in his record)

I have a question about these lists that I noticed at the time Solomon was making his record attempt. I am familiar with the lists as Alan Sigmon has posted them here, but I noticed also when looking at the men's 600m all-time list on www.all-athletics.com this performance:

Gray 1:12.21 24 July 1997 Santa Monica, CA

And so I wondered why this performance is on some list(s) and not on others. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. :)

My guess would be that it was for 600y. In '97 Gray was hardly capable of that time for 600m, with a best that year of "only" 1:44:56 (at age 37).

That's a really interesting list. Far more 800 guys moving down then 400 guys moving up, but there are a handful of the latter on both the world and US lists. Makes me wonder who would win a race with Rudisha, K James, L Merritt, Solomon, etc.? Would be great fun to watch.

Also neat to see Matt Scherer at #11 all time in the 600, since he has become the world's foremost 600 meter specialist, running that distance in seemingly every major meet.

First name that comes to mind in my "Dream 600" is Andrew Rock, he of the strange PRs of 44.35 for the 400 and only 20.84 in the 200.

Throw Gray, a couple of 400mh hurdlers (Batman and his finish come to mind), and Juantorena into the mix, we've got ourselves a race!
