Front Page Alleged Doping in Russia (Mail, UK)

A front page story in the Mail makes serious allegations. I seem to remember that they are not always the most trustworthy site.

I think this is the third such article in the british press this year. But over 40 athletes serving bans is huge.

"a front page story" means this site's front page, not theirs.

The Daily Mail is a truly disgusting newspaper but it isn't untrustworthy.

It's reactionary, xenophobic and wildly misogynistic but could definitely be trusted on proper news stories like this.

Oh what a surprise - not. Russians and doping - nothing has changed in the past 40 plus years - and the same with many of their cousins such as the Belorussians.

The one thing missing is the alarmingly large numbers of positive tests that come from the RW camp run by Victor Chegin. Makes Trevor Graham look like a choir boy.

Their headlines can tend to lean a little toward sensationalism though, as demonstrated by their VCB headline from last month... Seems their articles sometimes can as well.

There have been very strong "rumours" about this for quite some years. I was speaking once with a former employee of RUSADA (the russian testing agency) and even he let me know that apparently going rate is 50 Euro if you want a corrupt field testing official to turn a blind eye while you provide a substituted sample. (and we saw the Russians caught out at this prior to Beijing). And it seems some athletes have a more direct link to the head of the lab. WADA know about it (as mentioned in the article) but I guess it is quite hard to actually find "proof"

It is also why the laws were so strict and didn't allow samples to be taken outside of Russian to be analysed at a different lab.

But interestingly I think this is why we are now seeing more Russian distance athletes being pinged by the biological passport testing. Becuase there is very little way that any substitution or lab cover up can save you from being found out. The IAAF gets the elevated blood levels from competitions outside of Russia - and then it is only a matter of time before they collect enough "normal" profile samples either in Russia or outside to prove the dodgy profile. Unfortuantely this is distance athletes only - not until the passport is in place for urine/steroid profiling will you see many big name power athletes being caught out.

The Russians are well known for doing whatever it takes to win - drugs, blind officials in 1980. getting a couple of "brothers" together in the 1960s.

I wonder who the Russians will screw next month a la Campbell and De Oliveira.

Is it true that Joao Carlos De Oliveira was cheated of at least a silver medal in the triple jump at the 1980 Moscow games?

I believe one or two of the throws were obviously short measured as well.

As for the article, I'm sure this has all been reported before either here, AW, Letsrun MBs have all referred to this at some stage in the past year.
